What do you like/appreicate about coach Pastner
Pastner took over a tough gig when he arrived and I think he has done some good things on and off the court but the program continues to trend downward. IF the University and coach part ways after seasons end then much will be said both locally and nationally. Because he is well liked I anticipate a backlash for the national media (hope I'm wrong) against our city, university, and fans. In the event that this were to occur then I would like to have some sort of thread that outlines what we appreciate about the coach BEFORE any potential parting of the ways. This isn't a bash the coach thread. If you don't like anything about the coach then perhaps there is no need to post on this thread or perhaps a simple 'nothing' is ok. I would like to think most fans respect and appreciate Pastner. Would like to hear the positive on and off the court about coach Pastner. thx

RE: What do you like/appreicate about coach Pastner
While some may not appreciate his discipline methods I truly respect him for trying to instill values. With some it may never resonate and other it may resonate many years later.
I appreciate that his players have graduated. Reflects well for the city, schools, and his legacy. kudos.
I appreciate his tireless efforts to keep the program rolling after Cal left. He has worked his tail off! This wouldn't be easy for anyone much less a young man with no head coaching experience
There are more things I admire but I will stop with these comments.

What I like most is that he doesn't shy away from critics. In fact, he invites it. I don't believe any other coach would be as attentive as he has been In that realm. In the toughest times, he's stood up and taken the heat. None of us can appreciate how difficult these past few months must have been. And it's likely to get tougher in the coming weeks.

When Josh was hired, I emailed him to say congratulations. He called me and had a 10 minute conversation. Didnt have to do that, very cool.
Thats just one thing.
He hasnt been perfect, the last 2 seasons have been a mess, but all in all...hes done a lot of good on and off the court and should be remembered for such.

I've heard he's a nice guy so much that sometimes it irks me to the point of I don't wanna hear it anymore, until I realize that its probably true and have heard story after story of things he's done for people out of genuine concern and compassion even for complete strangers he didn't know so I will say he does seem to be a pretty good guy off the court. I have to remind myself of that from time to time.

Tons actually. I appreciate:
- The graduation rate and APR movement, it's nice to have players fulfill their roles as student athletes.
- His willingness to be the bad guy on discipline. I don't agree with his execution from the knowledge I have, but benching a guy you need is hard and I appreciate he is trying to instill values.
- On the court, his teams willingly pass the ball and that is NOT nothing. The 4 kings team, and most of his teams, move the ball and try to get good shots. I think he is not a great offensive coach X/O, but his base instincts on what make teams effective (move the ball and try to make all 5 guys offensive weapons) dove tails into what I admire about basketball as a sport.
- I respect his positivity, even in the face of (to be fair, warranted) criticism.
- I respect his work ethic.
- I like he tries very hard to be a part of the community.
- As hokey as it is, I like that even if the words ring hollow (run good stuff, hall of fame) he tries to spread wealth to other professionals in the field and behaves with class.

There is a LOT to like about JP. He's actually had a good, but not great, 5 year run. The last two years have been unacceptable and that will likely lead to his dismissal, but I hope once the dust settles, his good deeds, both on and off the court, get the credit they deserve.

I like that he visits sick people in the hospital. But about his coaching there isn't anything I like.

RE: What do you like/appreicate about coach Pastner
My wife and boys spent our Christmas vacation in Memphis this past year. We bought tix for the Tulane game and stayed at the Doubletree Hotel because we wanted to meet him at his radio show. The University photographer, Curt Hart, asked us why we were there and we told him we wanted to see the Tigers play, and to meet Josh. He told Josh, and he insisted he get pictures together. Josh also told us to meet him just prior to the national anthem on the floor, which we did.
Again, no other coach would take the time to make a fan(s) happy. My boys were beyond thrilled to have had that experience, and for that I'll be forever grateful to Josh.

That he seems to be a genuinely good dude, graduated players (the ones that stayed), and was perceived to run a clean program.

All this plus he truly respects policemen, firemen, and service men.

Class act. All the way around. We are off the NCAA Radar thanks to him and how he ran the program. I wish him nothing but great things in his future and thank him for the job he has done! This is and was and always will be a tough job. He always said that is the byproduct of a knowledgeable and avid fan base. He embraced the challenge, sadly the last two seasons the challenge was too much. In this world of instant gratification, two seasons to right the ship is an eternity and our fan base has zero patience. In years to come i believe his tenure at Memphis will be looked on fondly.

A total myth.
This was not a tough gig when he arrived. It was a top 10 National program with 16 -17 thousand fans in the building for every home game. He was able to recruit very easily at a high level thanks to the foundation that was handed to him.
If you want to talk about a tough gig to take on, look at what he's leaving behind.
What I like about him.... he's mostly optimistic I guess. About all I got.
