RE: Pac-12 interested in Las Vegas?
The Pac 14 could also create an arrangement to guarantee Hawaii a 13th game if they fail to make the conference championship. For example, say Hawaii's conference schedule is as follows:
H - USC, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon State, Stanford
A - UCLA, Utah, Arizona State, Washington
If Hawaii failed to make the Pac 12 Title Game, it could then host any North Division school it has not already played (which ironically, may include UNLV, akin to Missouri in the SEC East). If Hawaii wins the Pac 14 South, two of Hawaii's home opponents could play a 13th game at the site of their choice - in this example, either USC, Colorado, or Arizona could play one of Oregon State or Stanford.

Honolulu is the 66th-ranked media market in the U.S. Las Vegas is 40th and Albuquerque is 48th.
http://www.tvjobs.com/cgi-bin/markets/market2.cgi
The attraction of Hawaii to the PAC-12 would not be capturing the Honolulu market but rather the opportunity to build more awareness of the conference in Asia and Australia by having a Honolulu presence. PAC-12 football and basketball games played at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday nights in the Islands could be broadcast live on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. in Sydney and Melbourne, 2:00 p.m. in Tokyo and Seoul, 1:00 p.m. in Beijing and Shanghai, 12:00 noon in Singapore and 11:00 a.m. in Bangkok.
Another advantage is the potential for 4/5 additional games per year, should Hawaii road teams take advantage of the 13th game allowance.

Games scheduled one week out are a bad idea. But I like the thought.

Pac 12 needs Uconn. It would be a bit of an island, but the BB is really good.

Add UConn and Hawaii, for a potential QUINTUPLE HEADER:
11:00 AM Eastern/8:00 AM Pacific/6:00 AM Hawaii - UConn Home Game
2:20 PM Eastern/11:20 AM Pacific
5:40 PM Eastern/2:40 PM Pacific
9:00 PM Eastern/6:00 PM Pacific
12:20 AM Eastern/9:20 PM Pacific/7:20 PM Hawaii - Hawaii Home Game
That's more than 16 hours of football. Of course it would work better if you bring in a travel partner for UConn (how about Temple?) and then if Alaska had an FBS program (mainland Alaska is one hour ahead of Hawaii, so the last game still kicks off at a reasonable 8:20 PM Alaska time).

I imagine the LA & AZ schools do well there as well as Utah.
Tough to argue UNLV delivers it any better unless you are purely talking hoops.

Why would the Pac-12 add a team in only 1 sport?

Not what I'm saying. I'm saying that current P12 football teams likely get as good or better (likely much better) tv ratings in the Las Vegas DMA than UNLV does but probably not in hoops

Hawaii directly jumping from the Big West to the Pac-12? That would be nice to see

Agree with that, even though UNLV hasn't been as good since Tark left.

Never thought about it but the Hawaii exemption would make that possible, creating more content to broadcast in Asia. And football fans here would love it. The competition would be a huge step up for UH, but with a PAC 12 budget and the recruiting appeal that would encourage more of the best Island players to stay home (and attract more of their cousins from Samoa and elsewhere), the Warriors could hold their own.
I know the PAC 12 is content to stand pat, but it's a nice dream...

UNLV hasn't been a national title contender maybe but they've been solid for the last 15 years.

Would any of the "CA city" SU schools appeal to the PAC-12? Doubt it, but curious.

UC San Diego has the academics and the location that appeals to the Pac. They would be in right now except for one tiny detail - they don't have football.

Or any athletic pedigree in D-1. Besides, the Pac has California covered.

UCSD does compete in D1 for fencing and men's water polo. I know, that's not much more than nothing.
Sometimes I do wonder just how much the Pac has California covered. If you want to be a fan of a P5 school in this state you do have some pretty good options, 2 in SoCal and 2 in NorCal. But is there room for growing casual interest in the sport by adding schools? Might people care about teams closer to them as long as those teams get to compete against the teams they already hear about?
After all, California is a huge state. It has roughly the same number of people as Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland combined. And those states support 11 P5 schools between them. It's not crazy to think that there are potential fans out there that want options other than the four currently available. Maybe adding schools in San Diego, the central coast, the central valley and/or the inland empire might actually make sense.

RE: Pac-12 interested in Las Vegas?
Maybe Fresno State, as they have an entire region covered (and let's of course ignore Fresno's academic limitations as a CSU school for a moment) but otherwise I don't see anyone else making a big enough imprint at this point. Maybe if San Diego (i.e. the private school, not SDSU) had developed significantly enough decades back, it'd work but not now.
