A friend of mine played in the band at USC thirty-five or so years ago and said the band got regular hundred-dollar handshakes from alumni.

It makes you wonder, who in the hell are theses alums?

I go to functions, donate money, the works and have never once thought about handing a kid in the band a dime, nor am I ever even close to the band or any of its members. I can't imagine any of the others around me doing it either.

So it begs the question, just who is the archetypal alumni that goes around handing cash to random kids?

This guy?

I think you sort of answered your own question. I often find these guys are not always alumni of the university in question. They are guys who are long time fans of a school with lots of cash who believe the ends justify the means in order keep a program at a high level (see Nevin Shapiro at Miami, Bobby DiGeronimo at Ohio State among others).

I wasn't actually pointing at Shapiro. I know he was just a hanger-on. The question was who are the types of folks? You know, that type of guy.

Because, as I said, when you spend time in certain circles you see the different types, the banker, the lawyer, the car dealer owner, that kind of thing. So the question sort of remains who is it going around handing money to kids in the band?

The bag man does usually a midlevel booster not well known but has a purpose. This article does a good job of showing who does:

I thought that Newton's father got the money.

They could never prove any money changed hands, just that his dad was looking for it.

Did the USC Song Girls get paid? Because they are way better than a band.
