Lol at USM losing their head coach for a coordinator position. I promise you no coach in the AAC would do that.

Time to drop to the Southland Conference, Eagles. Mississippi just isn't big/rich enough for 3 FBS teams.

Not real funny to the current players and the ones that are currently committed to USM.

Lay off USM. That really sucks. They were just getting the program back and now they have to start again. I feel sorry for any team that happens to.

Don't worry, no one will ever hire a coach away from Toolame. The taint of coaching there taints you forever.

Seems timed to where Southern Miss has to promote one of his coordinators and where the staff will be kept together, at least for next year.

Unfortunately, USM has had just a worse turn of events since Fedora jetted.

Yeah .. the only silver lining is since their head coach is going to be a coordinator, he won't be taking any assistants with him.
Pretty crappy thing to do. I get it, but still, sucks for USM.

I'd certainly have preferred they hired Monken a couple of weeks ago, rather than 10 days before NSD, but you can't bame Monken for taking the job. He's a fine teacher and will do good things for the Bucs' offense, which I hate as a Saints fan. USM will have to try to convince someone else to leave their current job right here at signing day. If they promote one of the current coordinators, they will likely promote the defensive coordinator Dave Duggan, who at least was a head coach in NFL Europe for a couple of seasons. Beyond Duggan, I think the most likely candidate would be former USM linebacker Tyrone Nix. He is currently the defensive coordinator at Middle Tennessee and has been DC at USM, South Carolina and Ole Miss.

Seen this show before. Ray Perkins left 8 days before signing day to be OC at New England.
Thought we had Tommy Tuberville hired but the extra salary plus cost of buying out all the assistants was too high. Ended up going inside because Tubs wanted to replace all the staff.

The worse thing is trying to find quality replacement this late.

Terry Bowden may have an interest in moving back to the south. He has done a pretty good job at Akron.

I really liked what he was doing there at USM. Promoting from within to keep a class together would not necessarily be a good move, though.

RE: Southern Miss Football Head Coach leaves for the NFL...
Hated to hear this news. I really thought USM had turned the corner, and maybe they still will, but the job just got toughter. But such is the life for any G5 team who has a moderately successful program with a relatively young HC. The money's just not there to keep a high caliber coach for too long, unless he's an older guy nearing the end of his HC life (there are several examples...I think Doc Holliday and Tommy Tuberville are in that category, but that's just my opinion.) Even Tom Herman will --sooner rather than later -- leave Houston for the right dollars, regardless of what he says. He's a hot commodity (deservedly so) and an offer will come that just makes it untenable to stay with Houston. I get that.
Whether it's coaching salaries, paying players, TV contracts, scheduling, whatever the issue...money rules the college football game, and G5 teams just don't have enough of it to compete. Most of us just scratch out what we can. Even when one of our own does flame into brilliance, its often unsustainable to compete on the long term basis, with a very few exceptions. The money's just not there, nor will it ever be. The P5 cartel will make sure of it.
Our fans are just as passionate as any, and it hurts...a lot...when a Todd Monken leaves with the table set for a promising future. But it's the way of life in the G5.

That really sucks for Southern Miss. Losing your head coach this close to signing day is just brutal.
As others have mentioned, I assume they have to promote one of the assistants at this point or you would lose the entire recruiting class.
