That's great news. Just for kicks, I read his profile on Wikipedia. He's been very active in philanthropy with several important causes and organizations. Good for him. I think we're all proud to have him on campus and attending games. He was that once in a generation player we'll all be telling our grandkids about someday.

Good to see him around.

When he went down his senior season is still the worst sports moment of my lifetime. I have little doubt UC would have won the national title.

Isn't this exactly what the O'bannon lawsuit was about vs the NCAA? If you promote individual players you have to compensate them.

They can compensate them now. They aren't amateurs anymore right?

Really, what they need to do is get rid of the asinine rule that you have to be POY to retire a jersey. It makes UC look like they have no history. Put some freaking jerseys up on the walls of the new arena.

You had to bring it up. Worst memory in my long history as a U C fan.

Also, it was Huggs big opportunity for a national championship.

I thought the whole point of hiring coach Cronin was to move on from the Huggins era--why do we want to re-visit that period in Bearcat history--it has been panned by many on this board:

rath 2.0

The list goes on and on--if the program truly has a "new face", then it has to distance itself from the past...that includes the "student athletes" from that period that went on to the NBA--demonstrating that they weren't here primarily for a diploma, but rather for a quick stop off before they became professional athletes.

It's time to jettison that era--and all references to it.

Why jettison tradition? Unless it was marred by gross scandal (which it wasn't) you hold on to tradition and 'sell it' and champion it. Obviously SMU doesn't brag a lot about the Pony Express for good reason. But in the case of UC hoops and the Huggins period, I don't see any good reason to jettison that. I think what you are talking about is the constant comparisons of Mick and this era vs Huggs and that era. That we probably could with less of but I don't think you just pretend a great era never happened.

Freaking Kenyon Martin. Gave the University four great years, used his time here to give himself a great life as a professional athlete using what he learned and how he developed at our school. Was the first pick in the draft and a great career...he's done the university proud.

It's sad to see someone bash a man for being a professional athlete. A huge part of the goal of college is to help people get in position to support themselves and their families through life. Kenyon worked incredibly hard here and did just that. To look down on his career as a professional athlete as something the university shouldn't take pride in is very sad to say the least.

Not Kenyon, but I like seeing UC greats engaged with the program:

Huge treat to visit w/ Danny Fortson for an upcoming edition of "Bearcats Sports Weekly." Tremendous college player

I was barely old enough to remember the Van Exel teams, but Danny was the reason I became a diehard fan.

RE: UC Marketing: Kenyon Martin
my first year at UC the starting five was:

Marko Wright (then he got hurt and never came back)
Damon Flint
Curtis Bostic
Dontonio Wingfield
Harris (can't remember first name...6'6 center)

Once Durden was eligible after Dec he played a lot.

Wright broke his foot vs UNC in the preseason NIT I think and never really came back. He was a top 35 player out of HS too.

Julson never played that year because he had a staff infection pre season and didn't recover in time.
Gregor was on that team and Jacobs.

Overall it wasn't a great team. Wingfield was THE MAN though.
