Wink Football Assistant Coaches thread
Like the recruits thread, a place keep track of rumored and known coaches that will be part of Coach Houston's staff.

I will admit, I have been more concerned about the coach's ability to line up a good staff than the possible loss of a few recruits. It's late in the process and Houston, I would assume, doesn't have the type of connections that EW had.

EW brought in a lot of totally unproven coaching talent and was fairly successful with them. Especially on the offensive side of the ball. Young grad assistant types. I will bet Houston brings in people with prior OC and DC experience. They will probably be from Big South type schools like Western Carolina or, even some DII schools. We won't know much about them, but he will. Just a guess.

The flip side of that is that he may not have the connections from a national perspective, but I have confidence the ones he has are loyal.

Remember most of EW's first year coaches were GA's and coaches assitant's. Only a few had real coaching experience.

Ha, good advise. I didn't mean to imply that he doesn't have any connections, but not the type of connections - young (aka cheap), up-and-coming guys. His connections are mostly going to be guys he has observed or gotten to know while in the Southern - he has started following some guys from W. Carolina, as others have mentioned. I'm sure there are some talented DCs and OCs in the Southern, but how much do they make and how much is JMU paying? The dust has already settled on most of the coach shuffling, so it will be very interesting to see how this pans out.

Per Coaching Search:

James Madison: Per source, Citadel outside linebackers coach Tripp Weaver will follow Mike Houston to JMU. Weaver spent two years at The Citadel.

Yay for real info! I wonder what he's being hired for?

Quote:A native of Asheville, North Carolina, Weaver came to The Citadel from East Carolina, his alma mater, where he was an assistant coach for two years.

During his time with the Pirates, the team produced an 18-8 record including a 10-win season in 2013 when East Carolina finished the year ranked 24th in the nation in the AP poll.

Weaver served as a student assistant coach while attending East Carolina before joining the staff in a full-time capacity. In 2012, Weaver coached the safeties and helped tutor All-Conference USA selections Damon Magazu, who also earned the Pirates’ defensive MVP honor, and Godfrey Thompson.

East Carolina safeties accounted for more interceptions (eight) than the Pirates had totaled the entire previous season (five), helping the team finish 8-5 and 7-1 in the conference and earn an invitation to the R&L Carriers Bowl.

In 2013 he was moved to corners by new defensive coordinator Rick Smith, whom Weaver worked for as a student assistant three years earlier. His unit, led by all-conference choice Adonis Armstrong, helped lower the team's passing defense allowed average by 23 yards and grabbed nine of the squad's 18 interceptions.

The Pirates finished 36th nationally in total defense, their highest ranking since 2008, and the unit helped spark wins over in-state rivals North Carolina and NC State, marking the first time East Carolina defeated both schools in the same season.

Weaver is a 2008 graduate of T.C. Roberson High School. He received his bachelor's degree from East Carolina in 2012.

Interesting, all this talk about spread and TO, nobody mentioned the 3-4 which was by far the bigger concern on these boards the last 2 seasons. Was there any mention of defense alignment in the press conference? Don't remember one, probably waiting for a DC. Anyone know what the Citadel ran?

I believe he was one of the best recruiters for them as well

ONLY on the offensive side of the ball..

I would say he had no success with those he brought in on the defensive side. Bowyer is obviously reatained at least for a year. No one else on the defensive side should be.

I thought he said 3-4 AND 4-2-5?

Honestly, I have a lot of faith that Houston's 3-4 / 4-2-5 defense is going to be more hard-hitting (read: effective) than EW's 3-4.

EW's 3-4 = Stand and do nothing until the offense has gained 3-4 yards.

I think he has said his base defense is a 4-2-5 and he will sprinkle in some 3-4. He said they would be flexible on defense.

That's what I heard Houston say in the PC. It sounded like the 4-2-5 was the base D.

In Houston's press conference, he used the term "very multiple" regarding defensive alignments.

Yeah, it definitely seems like 4-2-5 is going to be the base. 3-4 was mentioned afterwards but I don't think it is as much of an emphasis as EW put it. He was pretty stubborn about it. Houston doesn't seem like that at all from his answers. Houston's D philosophy seems a LOT more flexible.

What was weird was the way in 2014, after about 6 games, EW would make adjustments to the D early on, usually by the end of the first quarter. 2015 he got stubborn as he!! and I couldn't ever see anything noticeable from the first to the forth quarters. Hence, RU ran all over us from beginning until the end.
