From a B12 perspective, maybe not much. From a B10 perspective, maybe more so. I think every school in the B10 is AAU, including recent addition Rutgers. Which also grabbed TV sets. So if you're thinking about downstream implications as the B10 expands perhaps, it's worth considering. Now all this said, I don't think MSU was AAU when they were added to the B10 back when, but became AAU after that.
Nebraska was, but lost it after getting into the B1G, and reportedly the B1G would not have invited Nebraska had it known they would lose AAU status.
Mizzou was trying to get into the B1G and they are an AAU school. Makes you wonder if the B1G wishes they had gone with Mizzou over Nebraska.

You can lose your AAU membership?
I guess that's obvious enough, but how often does it happen?

AAU really matters to the Big Ten, and to a lesser extent, the Pac-12. Otherwise it doesn't really pertain to this discussion.

So does footprint. Every member is located in a contiguous state. I am hoping geography matters significantly to the Big 12 - it is the one parameter where we are arguably the strongest of the candidates.
Average Distance to current Big 12 schools:
BYU 1,182
USF 1,248
UCF 1,226
Cincinnati 826
Uconn 1,516
Memphis 588
Houston 588 (already in the footprint - adds nothing new)
Tulane 766

Well then hell, we should get packing to move there now.
If the Big 12 had any sense they would be at 14 teams and be in more than 2 states
Oklahoma
Kansas
Texas
Iowa
West Virginia

Nebraska loses AAU status
There are research standards to be an AAU school and I also think the fact Nebraska's medical school isn't on the main campus hurt them.

B12 meeting Feb 4th of presidents and ADs will be interesting.

No, all fourteen are in a state that touches at least one of the others.

RE: OU President Boren is "very frustrated" that Big XII "let Louisville get away"
The Big 12's only chance is to go ahead and bump up to 16 now. The only schools out there are the only schools out there. Its not like North Texas or Arkansas State will become amazingly attractive next year. We are what we are and if they don't go ahead and grab Houston and Cincinnati and Memphis and a couple more, then they will be left with Southern Miss, Tulane, New Mexico, Wyoming, Boise State, Arkansas State or UTEP.
Do the math for the hundredth time.
SEC now has 14, needs 2.
PAC 12 needs 4
ACC has 14 plus Notre Dame, needs 1-2
BIG 10 has 14, needs 2
That's 9 or 10 and most likely the BIG 10 or SEC can steal one from the other 3
But in the end, we aren't eligible for the PAC 12
That leaves 5-6 openings for us.
The SEC and BIG10 ain't going to happen for us
That leaves 1-2 plus the poached, so the ACC would be our only chance, maybe, but they would be looking at UCONN and other Northeast schools too and we would be the furthest west.
Anyway, if the BIG 12 doesn't want to be left out/forgotten, they need to fill up now. Doesn't anyone remember the mighty Southwest Conference? These guys don't know what they are doing and haven't for a very long time. Texas A&M's departure to the SEC was huge and underscores their ineptness. We aren't TAMU, but we are the best y'all got, go ahead and take us!

Virginia Tech and North Carolina State
Quote:PAC 12 needs 4
This one might be hard:
UNLV, New Mexico, Nevada?, BYU?
Quote:BIG 10 has 14, needs 2
Virginia and Georgia Tech
Quote:ACC has 14 plus Notre Dame, needs 1-2 5
UConn, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Temple?, East Carolina?
Quote:That's 9 or 10 and most likely the BIG 10 or SEC can steal one from the other 3
Unless Texas joins one of the two, I think they poach from the ACC to fill gaps.

I think the ACC goes UConn and Cincy first because of the old Big East. West Virginia would probably be poached from the Big XII. If North Carolina State left for the $EC, I could see the Carolina schools wanting ECU to keep their balance.

If the Big XII has to go to sixteen and they lose WVU to the ACC when the dominos fell, I think we'd be in.
Memphis, Houston, UCF, Colorado State, Tulane.

So why can't those conferences just take the 9 or 10 from the Big XII? 10 Schools in the Big XII. Maybe TCU or ISU gets left behind.

Hey. If we can just get in a conference that doesn't have the freeking words "America" in it anywhere I'd be happy.

Ok, too lazy to look this up at the moment. But a guy was telling me he read last night that Marshall is hurting more financially now in CUSA than they would if they had stayed in the MAC. The travel expense increase is costing more than the increased tv revenue. Said they would entertain returning to the MAC.
Cost has to come into play at some point. Along with recruiting and other geographic synergies.
