RE: Will New Years Eve games flop in ratings?
Who didn't see this coming...the Rose Bowl needs to get with the times or they will have to work around the Rose Bowl...the Semifinals need to be on the same day and that is January 1...

At the very least, they should think about moving at least 1 semifinal every year to new year's day after the Rose Bowl.
Also for what its worth, Big10 Leaders and Legends lasted for 3 years from 2011-2013, not just 1 year, and was not changed until MD and Rut joined in 2014.

I didn't even watch the MSU-Bama game at all. We went out to dinner and then went to a friend's house party, which the tv was watching the NYE festivities.
Putting playoff games during NYE is simply foolish, and never needed to be "tested" to begin with. What else did they expect?

I stand corrected - apologies. Could have sworn they only had the names for one season.

Give the Sugar Bowl an incentive to move it to 31 December...this year it could have been Orange Bowl Noon...Rose Bowl 4pm and Cotton Bowl 8pm...on NYE it would have been Peach Bowl Noon, Fiesta Bowl 4pm & Sugar Bowl 8pm...

it'll be interesting to hear about the # of online hits. And if money wise that's equitable for ESPN.

I dont think there was anything unexpected this hear for the powers that be. Remember:
1. Last year was the 1st year and was always going to be bigger even if bogh were on the 1st.
2. Todays games will be far higher.than last years new years eve gamea making up some of the difference.
3. Both games were blowouts this year, making it easier to turn off

RE: Will New Years Eve games flop in ratings?
This is an odd situation, because the games were moved against the wishes of ESPN. ESPN wanted the games on New Years Day. When it was certain that wasn't going to happen, they wanted the games on January 2nd.
College Football Execs will claim that they are establishing a "New Tradition for fans" The reality is, the Rose and Sugar Bowls paid them large amounts of money and gifts to ensure their games were given protected time slots. College Football Execs don't care about the Tens of Millions of Americans who work on New Years Eve. (Traditionally ratings are always pretty low because of work in the morning, and with the night a date/club night for most others) They only care about people who provide them with money and gifts, and boosters who provide their schools with the same. Provided the games are fine for those people, they'll stay where they are.
As such, the Semifinals are contracted to be on New Years Eve two out of every three years until 2025. Occasionally they will get breaks. NYE on a Saturday next year means it's not a natural work day, so maybe better rankings, but the reality is most years, we're going to see Ratings fairly similar to this. While there is always a percentage of Americans who stay home on New Years Eve, those same people would stay home on New Years Day as well, so there's no gain.

The rose and sugar paid nothing outside of normal fees and the sugar had to fight to even keep the sec as the cotton fought there too. There is value for the conferences in keeeping these bowls big though and not just pre playoff things. To do that, keeping an event helps. They tried maximizing every bcs game and the result was games on primetime by themselves and a long term decline as the specialness declined with the games seperated. This might not work, but they knew there would be a rating drop going in.
