The article clearly stated that the Texas schools would block Houston from joining.
A few key aspects of a school that would be added (if any) are football reputation/tradition, fan support, and facilities. That is why UC & BYU are the "leading candidates", even though they are semi weak candidates. UC has mortgaged their athletic future to renovate/expand their football stadium in anticipation that they'll be asked to a Power 5 conference.
Also, these are reasons why a MAC school (as they are now) won't really be considered. Most stadiums in the MAC have between 20k to 30k capacity. Toledo leads in average attendance at 20k/game the last 8 years so so. The smallest B12 stadium is Baylors prestige/new stadium at 45k. The rest are 50k to 65k, with Texas having over 100k.
BYU holds 65k, UC just increased to 40k.
Can UT get to 40k or more? Would it make a difference? Is there a scenario where UT can join a Power 5 conference? Even if the Glass Bowl were expanded, what else would UT need to do to get an invite?
Can you imagine? Texas, Oklahoma, and Baylor at the Glass Bowl!?! Or, Kansas, Ok St, or Iowa St at Savage!?! Games would sell out pretty easily and the perception of UT both locally and nationally would increase tremendously.
