Let's Talk Turkey (Contract/Buyout)
Pastner had a 5 year contract that *auto-renewed* at the end of 2014-2015 and will again AFTER 2015-2016 (this season), guaranteed until Year 5 (2019-2020) at 2.65MM per year.

If he is fired, he is owed the full contract remainder (4 years * 2.65MM=10.6MM). If he is poached by another school or leaves on his own accord, either he or the other school owes $500,000 to the UofM.

He makes more money than a lot of notable coaches including Roy Williams.

These are just the facts.

What I would really love to know is WHY the powers that be structured the contract this way. It does not prevent another school from poaching your coach yet heavily penalizes the University and/or its boosters for firing Josh.

Pastner > Bowen at contract negotiations. Give credit where credit is due, Brad Martin must have been busy the day they hammered this one out.

When Pastner received his huge raise to $2.65 Million per year back in May 2013, he had just 1 NCAA Tourn win to his credit...as there was just zero reason for a huge raise like that.

Maybe this person got a nice kickback?

Bowen was schooled.

Looking back at Pastner's salary:

Year 1: $915,000

After Year 2 in Spring 2011, after going to NCAA Tourn and losing that game: Huge increase to $1.7 Million

Spring 2013, after winning just 1 NCAA Tourn game in his career, another HUGE raise to $2.65 Million

No clue what Memphis was buying for that extra $1.735 Million in raises that they gave to Josh over time.

Yep.

It's an absurd contract for most coaches, not just Pastner.

I would love to hear Bowen answer this on a radio show or in an interview.

For that kind of money; we should be getting a better product than a series of middling performances against a neutered schedule.

I don't understand the raises and I still don't.

His contract works against him in the fans eyes. If he made considerably less, and it was more in line with his actual results, then the venom would be less.

He is paid like someone who should be making the S16 2/4 or 3/5...

At first I thought the reason for the contract was just insecurity after the way cal left but when you look at the 500k buyout and what he was making before the 2013 contract, it makes no sense.

I do not understand the reasoning behind the 2013 renewal and definitely don't understand the contract terms that are so heavily in Josh's favor.

It is an interesting but ultimately moot point about the reasons driving the current contract structure. As mentioned by the OP, the fact is he is owed $10.6M and the money somehow has to be raised for it upon his firing.

Not necessarily.

Let us assume that Pastner knows he's on the hot seat, and while he's a lousy coach the guy is NOT stupid, and is working on other jobs. What IF we structure a way to pay his salary for the new school over a period of time if they will just take him off our hands? Is this possible?

That would allow him to leave without being fired, and give incentive to the new school to give him a new start.

It's the exact opposite of a moot point. The reasons for his current contract are why we are where we are today.

RE: Let's Talk Turkey (Contract/Buyout)
By may 2013, the signs of the poor job performance by pastner was already there.

As a long time local tiger fan, i have never felt so disconnected from tiger basketball, and basketball is my favorite sport. I feel no connections to any of the players. I really don't know much about most of them, and i feel it's a waste of time to figure them out when there is a good chance they will transfer soon. I know plenty of long time tiger fans that not only don't attend games but they are not watching the games or following the team until pastner is gone. I have attended one game and watched parts of 3 others so far this year. The rest of the games i just skipped or forgot about.

Tiger fans are starting to hate on pastner, because it feels like he is destroying the program/holding the program back. The feelings of tiger fans towards josh will only get worse. Usually, if a coach loses the fan base like he did for sure by last year, it's hard to get it back especially when you perform your job so poorly. He should have been fired last year. I think the damage could be more than 10 million starting from that point especially if pastner stays two more years.

If josh wanted to do what was right and based off his poor job performance, he would step down immediately, but he isn't going to walk away from all that money. This is not our (memphis') team like he claims, it feels more like this is the team/program that he is holding hostage until he is paid off. I know i don't trust pastner anymore to do what is best for our program and sometimes it even feels like he is purposely doing damage to the program because he knows his time will be over eventually.

If it was bowen that extended the pastner contract and he also failed to retain the last football coach, what does that say about his job performance? Maybe he should challenge himself to do better instead of challenging fans to support something that the majority wants gone.

Paying for potential, not performance.

And we were still battle-scarred from Cal leaving. Didn't want to be seen as a stepping-stone.

Good point. There may be a way to reduce the buyout cost to the school. What I mean by moot point is it may be a bad contract that was executed in the past, but there is nothing we can do now to change the contract terms.
