But to your second point, will anyone really look at Pastner, if he agrees to a buyout, as a coach that hasn't been fired?

LOL - no one will address that one will they?

6th winningest bla blah

150 wins blah blah

4 NCAA blah blah

Good guy, doesn't cheat (LOL), blah blah

Yet no one - no school of consequnce wants to steal away this Coach K in training.

Ding...ding...ding...we have a winner!

That is exactly what could and should happen.

The only guarantee is what's in the contract. Not saying this won't happen but it's an assumption at this point that both parties would agree to a lesser payout.
I'm sure JP will agree to a lesser Buyout!!
1.. He has made approximately 15,750,000 (counting this year) since becoming the HC here.. After taxes and all he probably has or is worth at least 9 million if not more..throw in half of his buyout money and geewiz.. Take a job somewhere making decent money if all you want to do is Coach.. With the money he has what he makes won't matter..
2.. He will not have the word FIRED! behind his name..
3.. The Administration probably likes JP and would rather he leave peacefully..
4.. Him taking a lesser buyout will make him look better to the eyes of many..
5.. I truly believe if he steps back and looks at the situation he should realize he is nowhere close to being able to handle or Coach at a place like Memphis or anywhere for that matter..I don't think this one is realistic from his point of view but it is to many others..
6.. By agreeing to a lesser amount he saves a lot of egg on his face for future endeavors.. If it gets heated that is.. IMO
7.. But if he had rather be fired and get over 10mil so be it, after all the big money guys are the ones that made the mistake not him!!

Again all speculation. The only known quantities are what's in the contract.

I can speculate that maybe the "see I am the coach" guy who sent in a resume to an NBA team before he was old enough to legally buy a beer might be a bit stubborn. But again, that is complete speculation.

Another school could have him for 500k + a new contract but I can tell you no-one at this point is going to match or exceed the 2.65 MM plus bonuses over 5 years.

I don't think a school will hire him as a HC, an Assistant at best!!

I am sure the auto rollovers were added as a means to help recruiting, in other words he could tell players his contract will run through their careers at Memphis. Conversely other schools could use the lack of a renewal as a wedge to tell other recruits CJP will be leaving Memphis soon and won't be there for you.

At this point that might actually help recruiting.

No 'might' about it.

Powerball is up to 227 million. Onetime payout would be 75.7 million. You could buy out Pastner and finish off the IPF funding.

HoopDreams hits the lotto:

1) buyout Pastner
2) IPF
3) season tix and roundtrip flights to all games for one season for Stammy
4) slush fund - HoopDreams will be the shady bag man

Actually, I believe Pastner will indeed coach again, but in a much lesser G5 (mid major) conference like Big West, MWC, or CUSA. He would do okay in a less pressure job like UTSA, Rice, Long Beach State, San Jose State. He'd be crowned king just to get into the NIT once every 4 years and the NCAA once every 12 years or so.

In all honesty, if it was me getting a $10.6mm buyout (plus probably having about $10mm already banked); I'd move the entire family to Hawaii and live off the interest/investment income the rest of my life.

The point was, with his great record that so many tout why aren't any BIG schools or P5 programs all over him?

Because, as you know Hoop, he's a lousy coach at this level. Beyond lousy. And others programs have identified that fact.

RE: Let's Talk Turkey (Contract/Buyout)
How bad does life have to get before you think of settling for less than $10M or taking another gig and getting $500k...honest question? If you're Josh, you've already put your family and friends through all sorts of hell by staying this long...might as well make up for that by getting every dime you negotiated for...

Yup. Especially when my next job would probably pay me $500k-$900k a year.

Don't get me wrong, he aint hurtin' either way...but $10M is a lot of dough!!
