Yep, even after this season he gets 10.8 M over 4 years to not coach. Declining at about 2.65 M per year for each year beyond this one that we keep him as the coach.

If a change was going to be made the time to do it was after last season before the auto-extension kicked in.

The roster is a disaster. If you think we're struggling this season just wait until next year when Shaq, Burrell, and Tarrant are gone and we have to start and play 4 freshmen or sophomores. Whether the coach is Psstner or a new guy, the results will be about the same.

There were warning signs even at the end of the 31 win season and certainly after our first year in the AAC. Mistakes happen BUT the real issue here is that we're boxed in by his contract.

None (or very few) of us have any real appreciation of just how hard it is to run a successful major college athletics program. It's absolutely got to be like herding cats; however, there are people who have figured out how to assemble, the staff and the players into a system that works. Getting it done is one thing and then maintaining success over time is another. When the pieces aren't fitting together it probably becomes overwhelming.

Low major, mid-major, and high-major programs all have a different expectation level of what constitutes success. Memphis is pretty high up the food chain of basketball programs. We're not Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, or Kansas but we probably slot in somewhere in the 2nd tier. It took the Kentucky job to pry X away from us.

If the top tier of programs are Feraris then we were at least a Cadillac. Pastner has turned us into a Ford station wagon. Good dependable transportation for sure and still better than most but not where we should be.......

Who is going to ante up the $11 million? I don't see it happening.

I keep hearing how Pastner is such a good guy with such high character. He should show it.

He should man up to the fact that the program needs a change, and cut the university a deal and go away for a reduced amount. He should "take the high road" and walk away for an amount that does not hurt the university for the foreseeable future.

I want to see him prove how big of a "nice guy" he really is.

In my career and industry everyone knows when someone is 'persona non grata' and being 'managed out of the company'. Hardly anyone can endure the treatment by management and stick around to actually be fired. Daily 1:1 inspections, micro managing, inspecting calendars every day, mandated travel away from home .... they make it intolerable. You're better off negotiating a mutually agreeable voluntary departure.

Hey Mapdude, I have thought the same thing many times, but never posted it.

We gave Pastner a chance, he didn't have to prove himself at Northwest Eastern Valley State or the like. Yet, to show his appreciation, when he had initial success, he started going for other jobs.

RC bought it when Josh went for the USC job, and now we are stuck.

I know he is good in the community, for $2.7M a year I would be good too.

True 80sTiger. I worked for GE for years, and they would just make your life miserable until you left.

But the money in this case is exponentially different. For $2.7M per year, you put up with a lot of crap.

And Josh is just different. He probably really thinks he is doing a good job.

I thought Bowen was AD when he was flirting with USC. I could be wrong.

I never claimed to be the brightest bulb on the tree, but this what really confuses me about the "other side" argument. Are you saying that you think Pastner has to be paid, in a lump sum, the entire outstanding amount of his contract on the day that he is fired? Based upon what? If I'm wrong, it wouldn't be the first time, but show me the clause that says that.

The contract terms are per year. The booster commitment to pay that amount, per year, was made three years ago, including the part about extending that five-year deal twice in the first two years automatically. Why would they have to accelerate the contractually agreed upon payment schedule?

And unless you have proof that is the case, the issue isn't "Who is going to ante up the $11 million." That has already been determined. The issue is whether there are enough people willing to ante up a combined million or two per year to pay a different coach. I think that nut would be a lot easier to cover.

And for all of you chiding the posters on this board who want Pastner gone to put up the money, why don't you conduct a poll to see how many would be wiling to do so under those circumstances? I can tell you this -- you can count me in. Me and at least 10,000 others that I know of. That's about $100-$200 per year. I'll write that check today.

Hey Scribe, my mistake, I think you are right.

Jeez, that makes it even more depressing.

RE: Pastner Going Thru the Motions
This is a good post. I've always wondered about that myself. It's not going to do his career any good by sticking around or sticking it to the university by saying "nyaa nyaa fire me, I dare ya". When he knows perfectly well he has zero defense to hanging around as the coach---except the money.

What! Take the high road.....in a straight jacket I guess. I agree there needs to be a change; but you can't be serious.
