RE: " we met with Justin in person"
So much for the Gary Patterson theory of staying long term and building a program. When his contract was revised, he took a smaller increase with a smaller buyout...that was a clear sign of what would happen. Has he been to Blacksburg? Difficult to get there and is coal mining country.
Hope we can keep this success going, this was a great year.

I'm right there with ya on most all your comments but I promise you the Player's did not know anything was going on until last week.. Some of them questioned him last week about it but he nipped it in the bud by telling them to quit asking him and to concentrate on the upcoming game.. Now I do think it affected the team a while back as far as Coaching goes.. It's hard to imagine Fuente not thinking about other things, VT, during his preparation and during games played.. Any insight on what the current players would think of Odom returning as HC?

Yes most of them want Odom including him and he is an Offensive player!! He is a disciplinary Coach and demands respect!! I along with my Friend (which holds more weight) think it would be a great hire!!

For what its worth...Fox Sports Radio last night said that VT had contacted Fuentes' agent right after it was announced that Beamer was stepping down on Nov 1st so this deal could have been almost done weeks ago and just waited till after Memphis' last regular season game was played.
Whats also noteworthy of Beamer's Nov 1st annoucement and VT contacting Fuentes' agents is that Memphis lost their next 3 games after that initial contact.
Things that make you go hhhhmmmmmmmmmmm.
Yep, this is the part that bothers me the most. I blame VT for this, not Fuente, but I definitely think it played a role in that 3-game stretch. Sure, Fuente can multi-task, but multi-tasking by definition means that your attention and focus are divided.
Why is it VT's fault if they contacted Fuente's agent/attorney weeks ago and said "lets talk". It was Fuente's agent that said "ok, lets do...whats your offer?" when he could have said "We will not talk to you or any other team till the morning of Nov 29th, right after our last regular season game".
Fuente's could have delayed any discussion with VT weeks ago but its pretty obvious know that they have been in discussions for quite a while...but that's not VT's fault...Fuente's allowed those discussions/talks to happen when HE had total control over them.
I guess I was thinking that they could have delayed their search until after the season. They initiated the discussion. Now, Fuente could have said call me on 11/29, but you know that would have taken him out of the running, because VT obviously wasn't waiting around. The blame, if there is really any, I guess is shared. Doesn't really matter, though.

So here goes, I certainly appreciate everything he did for our program and I appreciate it very much. On the other hand he left us when we are on the verge of really going big time in football and this will hurt us for a while. Therefore I kind of hope that he loses every game at Virginia Tech and Paxton Lynch will get more credit for getting our Tigers to the level we are now. Very mixed emotions on my part but that is the way I feel right now.
My sentiments exactly. Could not have said it better...

I think it was probably perceived by enough of the players with close relationships to notified position coaches that it deflated this team and said so here at the time. This season was very good, but could have been truly great had Fuente maintained focus and not conducted his business mid season. It will be interesting to see if Fuente is ever in a position to run the table with a team again anywhere.
I'm not surprised but disappointed in that I truly thought Fuente saw the possibilities to finish this season undefeated. I wonder what his market value right now would be if we were undefeated going into a BCS bowl game. This season was torpedoed as soon as Fuente took his eyes off the task at hand a month ago.
I don't blame him for leaving, but did it really have to transpire mid-season with a undefeated season on the line? Fuente even had another season to use as his launchpad assuming Lynch stayed to raise his market value. I guess the lesson learned is that a bird in the hand is worth two Tigers teams in the bush.

What's funny is that little Beamer is gonna be in his ear saying "Daddy didn't do it thataway" and running to the AD every week complaining. Hope he's miserable there.

This type of thing has been going on for years people. Just hard to keep it quiet in this age of social media and $10 websites. I wouldn't be shocked if this had been discussed after LAST season hence FU going for the lower salary and buyout.
He's going to a place where he's more comfortable raising his kids. Both he and his wife prefer a smaller town. Memphis ain't for everyone

The timing of Beamer's retirement Nov 1st and correlation of our 3 straight losses (Nov 7, 14, and 21st) bother me. I know it's hard to win every week, but I can easily see CJF and select staff being distracted.

Exactly. There's no way to start discussions at the end of the season, and no way to really keep it truly under wraps. It does suck that we were undefeated when all this likely started, because there's no way it didn't affect the team's morale, but it is what it is.
In the long run, if Memphis isn't a good fit for him & his family, then we need to find someone who it is a good fit for. Best of luck to him & his family.

Re: " we met with Justin in person"
This year has been unique in that so many jobs came open with several weeks left in the season. However, it is not unusual for schools to start contacting candidates immediately and interested candidates to have their agents engage in the discussions... Nothing to be bitter about. Back to back 9 win seasons and Fuente put us on the map. We all knew he was not going to here long term but he left us better than he found us, and that's all we can really ask. Best of luck to him!

Just to be clear, I'm not claiming JF purposely tanked anything. But he does put his pants on like the rest of us. And I know when I have been in the 'job change looking/listening' mode, I tend to 'get distracted' by my current job. Hard to focus when big moves like that are lingering.
