UNCW basketball and Coach Keatts
Are we dreaming?
As a fan, simply could not be happier with our program after only 1 year and a few games into the second year of Keatts at the helm.
We have an identity. We know what we will do and how we will play. And, most importantly, we have a SYSTEM that has been a proven winner. We can all hope, but in all likelihood Keatts will leave before his fifth year at UNCW if he keeps this up(and I am confident he will).
But, we can find a replacement for him, and we'll have a roster of players who will know the system and fit into the system. The coaching tree of Pitino is deep, and with the success of Keatts, it shouldn't be hard to find a coach willing to come here. The future of UNCW basketball is bright and more importantly success should be sustainable with this system.
Have to give all credit to Jimmy Bass for creating this relationship, and for pulling the trigger on letting Buzz go and taking the chance on Keatts. Nobody is even thinking about the cost of letting Buzz go anymore. And as for Bass, our athletics programs are all competing at high levels right now. Wondering where our Bass hater Cottonball has shuffled of to?

Since about the midway point of last season we've had this conversation a few times.
With any luck we will end up with a Keatts coaching tree. With a little more luck, perhaps a situation where Coach wants to stay longer and not bite at the first few P5s that come calling, e.g. Shaka Smart style.

Let's wait and see. It really looks promising for your #6 in the RPI Seahawks, but they haven't done anything big yet (under this staff) like go to the NCAA tourney and win once they're there. They looked good yesterday, but that's only 1 game. It's a fun style and they appear to have some/enough players now that fit that style. Hope that they can keep sharing the ball and play for each other. If so, they'll go on to have a good year provided the injury bug doesn't hit. Hope Kevin is here for a good while-I really like him a lot!

RE: UNCW basketball and Coach Keatts
Bill, regardless of where we go, I like who we are as a team. I like that we are a pressing, trapping team on defense for an entire game. As a mid, mid-major we have to have SOMETHING to give us an identity/advantage.
I can get behind this team, knowing what we are going to do each game...win or lose. Since Brownell left, we haven't had that. I never had any idea what Moss or Buzz were attempting to do as a team. We were horrible on defense, and our offense seemed to be whatever was handed to us.
With this style, we know we will compete each and every game, and we're always in the game, even if we're down 10. And, with so few teams facing this type of pressure on a regular basis, when we show up it will be hard to prepare adequately.
Who knows. We may falter this year(as a 7th. place predicted team in the CAA), but right now it looks like we're going to be a tough out regardless who we face.

KenPom has us at #143 after the ETSU game. NU, Hofstra W&M and JMU ahead of us

RE: UNCW basketball and Coach Keatts
Found this website. It uses Sagarin to predict the season. And, Sagarin is still a little negatively biased against the Hawks at this point and not quite accurate as it can be (which bodes well). Regardless, it has UNCW having a good season but just have fun with it. You always feel good after a nice win. It's a long season. I do think that they are playing a bit better sooner than expected. If you click on UNCW's link, it predicts the season and it has UNCW favored in most games except Georgetown away and a few CAA road games. Again, look at this and simply smile because it's a long season and things can change in a hurry.

I am sure he spends a lot of time thinking about it.
