I am too. But if it had not, and we had been kicked out of CUSA, it would have been the best thing for basketball.
Not according to our head coach.

This conference really is terrible. It's possible that the Sun Belt would be a step up in basketball.

Those scare tactics of UAB ending up in the Atlantic Sun is starting to look like a step up.
I hate this conference.
We all know how happy your were when you thought we were getting the boot. The thing is, you don't know where we might have wound up.

Fact is, this school isn't just basketball fans any more. And what about the other sports. As much as you appear to be focused on basketball you seem to forget that the other sports could have been affected.
Just roll with it and it'll be ok. If we can go ahead and get things moving in the right direction in 2017 maybe we'll move up to AAC and hopefully to something better after that.
Honestly, this isn't the 80's and 90's anymore. If you think UAB is overshadowed by UA and Auburn now, imagine if UAB went to only basketball in a football oriented state.

Exactly.
I think of C-USA is an incubator conference. No one really wants to be here long term. It only makes sense that everyone wants to make in into a power conference, but you don't just fall up into one. You have to dominate and show you're worthy of getting called up. If our programs roll and we start looking good, then things will change. No reason we can't make the best of things as they are, though.
That said, hell yeah I like C-USA. I still one hundred percent believe that the permanent loss of football wouldn't do basketball any favors at all. A terrible out of conference record as a conference? I'll take it any and every day over the what could have been. At best, some teams can get it together and get some upsets. At worst, if so many of our conference mates are that bad, we should be starting some of that rolling relatively soon.

RE: I'm so glad we get to stay in CUSA
There is enough POTENTIAL in this league for it to be decent in basketball. Aside from us there are WKU, ODU, UTEP, and Charlotte. Those schools have had above average success in basketball. They aren't all at their peak right now, but they are capable of being good teams when they play to their potential. La Tech and MTSU are also decent by historical standards. The lack of success by other programs like FIU, FAU, Marshall, UTSA, North Texas, etc. is not new and isn't likely to change by any really significant degree.
We were perceived as a weak league even when Memphis was here. We're weaker now because the teams that historically have had success are now also struggling a bit. We haven't been a strong league since Louisville and Cincinnati left years ago. I'm not that worried about the long-term implications because I think WKU, ODU, UTEP, and Charlotte will get better. But with any luck, hopefully we can establish ourselves as the top basketball and football team in the league so we can be prepared to move up when there is more movement.
Not saying I have any inside information, but I have no problem tolerating the current circumstances if it means us having a chance of making it to the Big XII for example. Lots of examples of the big fish in the little pond getting to move up. First have to establish ourselves as the big fish.

No it's not exactly and I don't mean to be rude. To your first statement, any G5 conference is viewed as a incubator conference. To your second paragraph, UAB Basketball would have been fine with or without football but many of you cannot look at objectively because of your love for football.
You're basically saying you're good with UAB being in CUSA because of football but don't care that this conference suck at basketball. OTOH, you would have been miserable if UAB not had football but basketball ended up in a better conference. I guess it comes down to what means more to you.
Dang, turning a basketball thread to a football thread. Happy Thanksgiving!!!

That's true if you assume that Ray was content with dismantling football and stopping there. We can't know what would have happened had we failed to stop Ray, but our allies among the Faculty Senate, among the vice presidents, among the Med School and others were fighting to preserve a whole lot more than football or athletics.
Ray "42 Years" Watts and his mentors on the Board were out to drop UAB back to ca. 1972. No football, no basketball, no women's darts: only the undergrad programs that feed and/or exalt the Seven Favored Programs of the Med School (and only The Seven).

Well I think we would all agree to just simply not rehash this topic. Happy Thanksgiving to all on Blazertalk!

Very happy we got to keep our C-USA membership. I wrote all the MVC presidents begging them to not deal with our rogue president. When the big split happens, we need to fall with the football playing schools to keep our basketball from dying on the vine. Coach new this. That is why we have a football team in the first place. Cubby knew this too, thus the kick in the nuts to our football program every 5 years.
