I really dislike having to go to penalty shots to decide a game. Akron lost a national championship that way. We lost a national championship that way. Anywho, congrats to today's winners.
That's just MACtion baby

Yeah, I'd much rather take two players off after the first OT, play for a while, take another two off, and so on until there's a score.
College hockey conferences are going to 3 on 3 for OT.

Stanford wins their first men's soccer national championship 4-0 over Clemson. Congrats to the Cardinal, who finish the year 18-2-3.
Clemson finishes the year 17-3-4.

Stanford's four goal win matches the largest margin of victory in a title game (Saint Louis beat the University of San Francisco 4-0 in 1969).

Stanford's first ever men's soccer title extends to 40 years the streak of Stanford winning at least one NCAA team title per year.
It also raises the total number of NCAA team titles won by the school to 108. Here's the leaderboard:
UCLA 113
Stanford 108
USC 100
Oklahoma State 51
Penn State 47
Arkansas 43
LSU 43
Texas 43
North Carolina 40
Michigan 36
California 34 (lol Cal)

Clemson got destroyed. Good to see Jeremy Gunn (Charlotte's former soccer coach) win the big one with Stanford. Gunn left for Stanford after he took Charlotte to the national championship match a couple of years ago.

Yeah 4-0 is like 42-3 in FB. Didn't see that one coming.

Syracuse was 16-5-4 overall in 2015. Finished in the top-25 nationally in average attendance. Nice run for your Orange

Stanford poured it on in the second half.

I wouldn't have believed it until I heard the announcers say it. That is an incredible statistic. Four decades of at celebrating at least one national title on campus every year. Most schools are lucky if they even have a couple all time, period.
Unfortunately the critics would ask how many schools have wrestling, squash, men's or women's water polo, men's volleyball, fencing, etc.? Not a whole lot. They'd have a legitimate point. Yes, I am fully aware that one of our national titles came in men's water polo (the other is men's soccer).
Nonetheless, congrats on joining the crowd and winning your first men's soccer national championship. I know what that's like. It's awesome.

There is no secret to the formula for Stanford's title count (and the streak of Directors' Cups.) Have a ton of sports and be good at most, great at a few each year. But I like pointing out that having dozens of varsity sports isn't enough. Ohio State, for example, fields more sports than Stanford does, yet has never won a Directors' Cup and is outside the top 10 in total NCAA team championships.
I hope the soccer title inspires more excitement for the sport and maybe gets me to take a trip to UCSB in the coming years. If collegiate sports as we know them ever collapse I envision Stanford wanting to share a bus league with the UC schools. Might as well get a soccer rivalry going, just in case :)

The secret to national titles is pretty simple:
be in California,
have a gazillion in endowment,
have a lot of sports that nobody else can afford or want.
