Rules impact in college basketball
was looking in Ken Pom and saw this line:
Season to date comparison (ppg, efficiency, poss/game): 2014-15(68.5, 99.1, 68.5), 2015-16(73.3, 100.8, 72.0)

so for the games this year- scoring up so far by 4.8 PPG. More possessions by 3.5. And better efficiency. Looks like the rules are a winner so far.

If Butler can score 144 points in a game then you know it's gotten better.

I think even more amazing is what Cincy has done. 203 points scored in 2 games.

It's going to be interesting to watch and see if this continues.

Also another thing to watch will be the womens games. they're doing quarters this year. I think long term, that's where we're going.

RE: Rules impact in college basketball
Points per game and possessions per game aren't necessarily the right metrics though, since both are influenced by the number of free throws per game. I don't care as much about points earned through free throw contests, and I don't care about possessions gained after fouls.

(Disclaimer: my preferred team fouls a lot.)

Effeciency is up though by almost 2 points. Flies in the face of what the shot clock opponents said- that it would kill efficiency. NOT.

It has been very noticeable thus far. The only issue I have is the ridiculous stoppages of play with foul calls.

Boeheim wants 24 secs...that would be almost unfair for teams to figure out his zone in 24 secs. LOL

The few games I've seen so far- I thought the fouls that were called were fouls.

I prefer no shot clock and low scoring games, but the majority has spoken.

Or ACC games from the 60s and 70s. One NCSU-Duke game was 12-10.

RE: Rules impact in college basketball
My concern going forward is if the game mirrors the pros too much and those defensively disciplined teams lose their style to it. Certain broadcasters have ruined the game enough with incessant media stoppages. Momentum in the college game is something you get without cameras present.

The longer shot clock gave teams without the biggest and fastest guys some room to rely on others to not have to speed through each possession. Now, the game favors faster players again. Not bad if you liked those old LMU teams, but a nasty defense with a longer clock could balance that out.

Oh well...it will take time. Nice to see offense again, though.

The problem is- basketball became maul ball. It wasn't great defense, it was mugging everyone in site.

RE: Rules impact in college basketball
some interesting stuff:
http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/..._new_rules

more fouls- 20.2 last year 1st weekend to 22 this year
more 3's- 36.3% of FGA 3's. would be highest ever
3pt accuracy not suffering
2pt shooting better

but last point is one that is fascinating. Defenders still only have 5 fouls. But now they are on the court for more possessions. So they can't contest as much as they used to.

That's how a lot of schools up in the northeast played it. Big East schools still do it, sure.

I was talking about those UNI and Wisconsin types: disciplined, seasoned teams who force the basics and make you toss up trash without a chance of getting a rebound. Everyone has to now be faster to set up those schemes, or, like you said, you don't defend your best *every* possession.

They let the Big East style of officiating take over the NCAA tournament in the 80s and eventually all of college basketball. They really ruined the game. They need to start calling fouls again and change the game back.

well, hopefully the new refs coordinator will reign in the refs- and force them to keep on calling things this way the entire season- and not let conferences dictate what is called.

Not in some of the game I watched. It's too disruptive. I guess I'm the in "let the kids play" camp.

Agreed. Teams will adjust this season, probably by mid-season. A team that is overly physical is going to realize by mid-season that one or two of their players are fouling out every game and their opponents are consistently getting about 15 more free throws per game. Any good coach will adjust instead of letting that continue.

The problem is the coaches then teach the kids to continually mug and you have maul ball. Kind of like in the NFL with Seattle- now that refs are calling the illegal contact more consistently, all of a sudden Seattle's defense sucks.
