The play calling was so bad at times tonight...
A pitch inside our 22.
A short pass over the middle by Paxton into coverage and straight to a Houston LB..
The overall way we played the 2nd half.
We still can't defend the pass to save our lives. Instead of bringing pressure and sticking to what was working, Scott gets SCARED anytime we play someone who can throw the ball. Fire him tonight. Make him walk back to Memphis.
Had Ward stayed in we'd have won by 40.
Nothing left to play for this season other than double digit wins.
Book your Birmingham Bowl tickets now.
Still pretty heady stuff for Memphis football, considering that we've only done it once since 1938.
Sure.... Not as if that stat even matters.
Quit living in the past. Same stupid arguments used in basketball. Just stop...
At the beginning of the season saying us winning 10 with losses only to Navy and Houston would have been great.
But, once you get to 8-0 with wins over Cincy, Ole Miss, BGSU. You start looking ahead to maybe something special.
We took one on the chin against Navy, got it. Still have a chance by beating Houston.
We were up 20 IN THE 4TH QTR...
We called a stupid pitch inside our 22...
Lynch threw the dumbest pass he's thrown all season.
We dropped 2 interceptions.
We stopped getting pressure on the Houston QB. (We didn't get stopped) (We just stopped)
We sat back and left Houston WR's WIDE OPEN.
Maulet still can't defend the long ball.
We have the ball inside FG range with 30+ seconds left and a timeout, ad Lynch throws 2 passes in a row. THE ISSUE is why was he passing at all? We're already in FG range. All we have to do is CENTER the ball and try to get a few more yards.
Memphis was the better team 100% tonight. Our defensive Scheme SUCKED once Postma came in.
Offensively, our play calling became very questionable, we went conservative too early.
Don't even get me started on the kneel down to end the 1st half.
We're up 13. On our 30. 2 timeouts left and 30 seconds remaining. We didn't even try anything.
Several people have been saying that conservative **** was gonna cost us. Bet Fuente would have gladly taken a FG there now.
We have go to stop stopping ourselves, period...
We game planed to play conservative the entire game. We had a large lead with the conservative game plan. Before the last driver we had ran it 54 times to 25 passes in order to control clock. We did the same thing to them that Navy did to us until the last half of the 4th quarter. We controlled the ball and limited their touches.
The main difference is that Ward could not hit the side of a barn tonight and the backup could. Just one more first down in any of the three back to back to back series late in the 4th and we win.
Fuente, Lynch and Scott cost us that game. PERIOD..
They game planned for Ward got it. Drive the ball, keep him off the field. When a QB comes in who can CLEARLY pass the ball, Scott DID what Scott ALWAYS does. He stopped bringing pressure, and the defense sat back SCARED of the long ball. Yes, they got tired, the offense screwed them over on back to back possessions... Still doesn't change the fact Houston had WR's 7-15 yards from the los sitting there wide open, or all of the miscommunication, or any of the NUMEROUS other issues they had. Like dropping an interception with 3 minutes to go, on a drive HOUSTON took the LEAD on.. The secondary looked like they were asleep.
As far as the offense goes, they blew it big time and the play calling as ass. Also, EVEN WITH all of the mistakes. We had a chance to win. We put Elliot in a position to kick a FG from the FAR LEFT HASH when we were in FG range on 2nd down WITH a TIMEOUT.
All we had to do was RUN IT UP THE MIDDLE TWICE. If we don't GAIN anything WE'RE ALREADY in FG range. AT LEAST we would have CENTERED the ball for him. The last 2 plays were horrible. We had about 5 yards to play with. NORMALLY, you get with your kicker and ask them where they want the ball. WHICH Clearly DIDN'T happen either.
I'm done commenting on the conservative ****. It's been stated by numerous people during several games that it would eventually bite us.
You do not stop yourself. Period. You don't settle up 20 with 14:30 remaining in the game on the road against a ranked team. Yes, I know the 2 turnovers hurt, but seriously... a pitch inside our 22... A short pass over the middle into coverage and where their LB Howard was sitting at waiting? Those turnovers were avoidable and 1 was unforced... You never pitch or throw the ball backwards inside you're on 25... They tried to get cute and it cost them.
It's over now, so it is what it is... Hopefully they get past Temple and SMU. Can still win 11 games.
