The cartel will not let that happen.
For a G5 to make the playoffs, they will have HAD to have done something against a P5 Power to make their case. So what made Memphis a special case, what gave them an outside shot at the playoffs, was their win over Ole Miss.
Now, let's consider for a moment the scenario that would have had to develop for Memphis to have a real shot:
1) LSU beats Alabama.
2) Ole Miss beats #2 LSU.
3) Ole Miss beats #20 Mississippi State.
4) Florida wins out and enters the SEC CCG at around #7.
5) Ole Miss beats #7 Florida to win SEC title.
After beating all those high-ranked SEC teams, this probably puts Ole Miss at about #4 in the CFP Rankings.
Memphis wins out, and the argument is: "How can Memphis be left out when we beat the #4 ranked SEC champion, and decisively"?
And that argument might have won the day.
NOW, does HOUSTON have anything like that going for them? Any wins over any P5 powers?
Nope, nothing.
So Houston has NO chance at the playoffs. No G5 will EVER make the playoffs by just beating other G5 teams, even if they are ranked in the 20s like some AAC teams are. Wins over teams like Navy and Memphis and Temple, all of whom will surely FALL OUT of the rankings when Houston beats them, mean nothing.
Never.
