Number one, JK doesn't hire assistant coaches, Bailiff does.
Number two, when AD's get involved at that level, it almost always does more harm than good.
Number three, I think what's really missing is some underlying philosophical approach that is something more substantive than we're going to recruit better and hope to God that it works.

He was at the annual Baseball Banquet tonight, and was clearly not happy with the past two games, despite them ending in victories. What he does about it remains to be seen. The general consensus of folks I spoke with this evening was that we simply do not have the killer instinct under Bailiff. Yesterday's game should have been a route, especially how easily and quickly we jumped out to a 14-point lead. For whatever reason, we took our foot off the pedal, and Army took full advantage. Whether it's play calling, focus level or sense of urgency, something is definitely missing.
I don't see that it's play calling per se. Our play calling never really changed during the game, given down, distance, field position, and other considerations. And we scored 38, which should have been enough to win in any event. I do think the frustration with play calling is more the lack of an overarching philosophical approach. If we had some idea what the hell they were trying to do, it might make more sense. Instead we just seem to have this grab bag approach, and it's nothing new. I've had this same complaint under Mensa, under Zaunbrecher, under Beaty, under Reagan, and under Lynchmondson (when you have two offensive coordinators, you have none). Quite frankly, it was probably somewhat less under Reagan than under anyone else, but pretty much there all along. The constant has been Bailiff.
I do think focus level has been a problem for years, and I've opined on that before. Again, I think it's hard to focus without knowing what to focus on, and I still don't understand what we are trying to do. Not that it needs to be explained to me, but it should be obvious by this point and it simply isn't.
