I was telling a friend about this during the game .... Sorry for SB and his family that it worked out this way, but DW has proven to be far better in our system
Looking forward to the rest of the season and seeing what the O can do with a mobile dual threat QB

So Taylor Heinicke's parents come to their first game and he comes off the bench and leads us to a comeback win, and Shuler Bentley's dad comes to his first game and sees his son benched after a 3-and-out...

Washington looks like the QB to finish the season, but he also played against what may be the worst team in C-USA this year (we may be the 2nd worst). I also wonder how his production will change once teams have tape of him being the QB. He had a great night, hopefully he can keep it up.

I would also like to mention that it isn't only Washington who played well. Receivers played their best game of the season, bar none. They actually caught passes thrown to them, and made plays after the catch.

Great win, but threads like this will, at best, only cause further dumb dumb arguments.

Well Said and I agree %100

I thought his dad no longer coached at Auburn?

With all due respect:
I think I saw one or two posts alluding to some kind of hypothetical conspiracy concerning Bentley's dad and Coach Wilder.
I have seen nothing, not one post, directly attacking either SB's character or personality.
Indeed that would be a violation of this board's Acceptable Use Policy.
I don't read every post, so please direct me to those posts and I promise you I WILL delete them and warn the posters.

To accuse this board of collectively targeting Shuler Bentley's character is, IMO, completely unfounded.

Excellent post. I was on the fence with regard to the benching. I also didn't expect Washington to look as good as he did and I'll gladly eat crow on that, especially if he shows he can compete at a high level against better competition. I got sick of the thread that kept getting bumped as I don't like to kick a guy when he is down, but I certainly didn't see any personal attacks or rule violations. While I didnt exactly enjoy everything I read, everyone is entitled to an opinion and I think the mods handled it well by allowing the open discussion. My opinions during basketball season aren't always the most popular either.

SB may be ready to start at an average FCS school but maybe not the FBS level YET. He has three more years here, maybe. It's all speculation I just want to enjoy yesterday's victory and VT's loss. What did UVA do?

UVA won.

SB would be taylor (see what I did there? 03-lmfao) made for the Pro set that Laycock runs at W&M.

Did anyone else hear on the post game where one of the announcers speculated that SB was possibly too small to be an FBS QB because of his "5'11" frame" ? Was that said or did I hear mis-hear that?

I think he that SB may be too small to be a pocket qb at the FBS level and that he plays like he is 6'4 when he is 5'11.

I'll call myself out for the fact I may have attacked not sure. I did state something along the lines that SB father built a team around his weaknesses in high school and that coaches son good or bad usually dont get benched when your father is the head coach.

I felt we needed to stick with him a bit longer when you made the original poll. After another game...I was ready for the change and I can understand why they waited. They needed to get some reps in for dw.

I also said no in the poll. I thought SB would start living up to the potential he demonstrated in high school. He may yet, but after watching what DW did last night, I have to agree that he brings much more to the position than SB, at least for now. If he continues to play at this level and improve with more playing time, I could easily foresee DW playing QB for the rest of this year and next year too. No telling what we do with Verhaegh coming back next year also.

I was fine with the Poll. I'm sorry SB's family made the long trip up here to see him removed from starting but it was time for a change.

That is an odd statement since their was zero reason to bench him as he was State player of the year.

I mean I'm not getting on board with that conspiracy, but his back up was his 5 star brother if I remember correctly.

IIRC his brother Jake spent a lot of that time healing and rehabbing from an acl tear. It might have been two acl tears.

RE: No apologies needed
We simply don't have the offensive line for SB to be good yet. SB has feet like cinderblocks, so he needs time in the pocket. (and a little better aim) Our OL can't give that to him yet. Maybe they can in 2 years. For now, we must have a mobile QB to have a chance to win and DW gives us that. Don't be fooled, we're not good, even with DW. We just made a huge comeback win to beat the second worst team in CUSA by 3 at home. We still may not win another game, but at least with DW I once again feel like we have a chance and will be competitive in all the games except WKU and So Miss. If we somehow upset FIU on the road next week I'll be a LOT more optimistic. Our record is exactly what I expected at this time. Its just the lack of competitiveness in the losses that had me worried. With DW at QB I have reason to have hope for this team again.

I agree it's a wait and see with Washington but I saw a guy go out there and execute at a position he has really never gotten a chance at during game situations. Obviously doing it in practice is a lot better than doing it in a game. Does anybody have a clue as to how many times we ran the same plays with DW? It looked as though he was working with a very simple and predictable playbook and still had huge success. Curious to see that if he is named the starter, how much the staff implements to play to his strengths. We could've found something special here.

DW needs to not run any more than necessary. We can't really afford a running QB at this time. If he has to scramble then OK, but I don't think we can afford him getting another concussion.
