SoCon Point Guards in the Preseason
Ge’Lawn Guyn 6’2” 185 Sr., last full season stats: 19 min., 4.5 ppg on .309 from 3 (29 of 94), .361 from the field, 1.0 assists, 1.0 t.o.'s, 2.0 rebounds, 0.6 steals
Petey McClain, 6’0” 185 Sr., 21 min., 1.6 ppg on .381 shooting from the field, 4.2 assists, 1.0 t.o.’s, 2.1 rebounds, 1.0 steals
At 6’2” 185 with a chiseled body Ge’lawn has 2 inches on 6’0” 185 Petey and better hops. He can really elevate. He’s got more experience defending the best in the Big East and ACC and brings a tough guy Cincinnati Bearcat attitude, although Petey got a few more steals against lesser competition. Neither is a strong shooter, and neither has put up many points, but Ge’lawn is more aggressive going to the basket and getting his shot off. I think Petey has better pure point guard skills. In the full court drills he seemed to have better court vision, pushed the ball up the court faster, often on a laser length-of-court pass, and got the ball into the hands of somebody in a position to do something with it. He may be slightly faster, or it may be a result of effort and ability to see the court that he was making things happen faster. Both have great handles, with a slight nod to Petey based on this short look. Although other teams will have an edge in scoring points from the point, the Bucs should excel in generating assists and forcing turnovers. Petey looks like he’s been working hard – upper body is muscled up – and he’s enthused and confident.

Jonathan Jean 5'11" 170 Fr PG, 2 time Florida all-state
They were second to last in the SoCon in turnover margin and dead last in assist to turnover ratio. So who’s really the point guard here? I have just listed all the returning guards above. There’s room for Freshman Jonathan Jean to move in if he’s ready. Niko Medved had no qualms about playing freshmen last year, even though it cost him in the regular season. It paid big dividends in the tournament.
