Even Lurkers Can Defend Rice Over Newspaper Articles
In Alan's email this morning he had a story from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette about the signing of Boswell. In the story this line appears:

"They traded that in for a player who kicked in Conference USA at Rice University, a school better known for its academics than its ability to produce NFL players."

Dr. Tiki took exception to the statement and since the writer posted his email he received this from her (in her haste she did leave a few older Rice/NFL players off):

"Yep, Rice isn't known for its ability to produce to produce NFL players, all right, maybe except:

Tommy Kramer
OJ Brigance
Vince Courville
Michael Downs
Coutrney Hall
Larry Izzo
ND Kalu
Frank Ryan
Earl Cooper AND

CURRENT players:

James Casey
Phillip Gaines
Vance McDonald
Cheta Ozougwu
Andrew Sendejo
Scott Soloman
Luke Willson
Christian Covington

Geez, do your homework instead of just perpetuating the myths about Rice! "

Needless to say she hasn't received a reply.

Look up databasefootball.com under players by school. It looks like there were about 50 of them including some other famous names such as King Hill etc.

Thanks for sticking up for Rice!

As a tactical matter, my experience is that, when it comes to getting writers to make corrections, honey (along the lines of "Thanks for the mention; here's some additional information that might be interesting to your readers") tends to have more effect than vinegar ("How could you not know this?").

Yeah I thought that was a pointless dig, especially when you're talking about a team like the Steelers who seem to thrive on players from non football powerhouses (Big Ben, Terry Bradshaw, Mean Joe Greene, etc.)

I was thinking the other day - who should be considered our most accomplished current NFL player? Is James Casey even playing much for the Broncos (I haven't seen any of their games yet but I know he hasn't caught a pass for them this season). Maybe Sendejo?

Luke Willson has a super bowl ring and gets pretty solid playing time in Seattle. The fans even know to yell his name after catches.

I think the "kicked in Conference USA" part was a little gratuitous, too. What, are the goal posts further apart in C-USA?

And Cairo Santos (who Boswell battled with for several years for the mantle of top kicker in CUSA) is doing great in Kansas City.

Hmm, well, I don't like the tone, and of course Rice does both, but it's probably a true statement that Rice is better known for academics than for producing football players.
