Actually they are Scalliwags. Northerners are Carpetbaggers.
Carpetbagger: A person from the northern states who went to the South after the Civil War to profit from the Reconstruction. A person perceived as an unscrupulous opportunist. In reality, a bunch of Yankees.
Scalawag: A white Southerner who collaborated with northern Republicans during Reconstruction, often for personal profit. The term was used derisively by white Southern Democrats who opposed Reconstruction legislation.
My guess is Oxford was home to both groups.

Memphis certainly was.

Exactly. Memphis, being occupied by the Yankees and never burned, was bustling with activity after the war, with all kinds of industries that helped rebuild the South. Lots of scalawags and carpetbaggers and Yankee entrepreneurs, many of whom became Memphis' finest families in the last century, namely the Orgills and the Nickey's.

Memphis was one of the smartest cities in the war. They came out unharmed. Many other cities were destroyed.....including Oxford.

I'm not so sure about smart, but it worked out that way, and we really should have been Atlanta with all our resurgence, but the Yellow Fever derailed us in 1873 and 1879.

I don't believe "smart" had anything to do with it.

Just so they don't get "Flu-like symptoms" or "stomach flu". That's a sure sign a team is going to win their next game.
