RE: House Speaker vote later this week
Shepherd Smith is such a drama queen, ranting and raving that the Tea Party has shut down the government and it will be impossible to get anyone to 218 votes. He is essentially whining about the system working. Everyone agrees a Boehner 2.0 would be a bad thing, but when that is subverted, that's bad, too?

Just a guess, but I'll say Paul Ryan is next Speaker. I know he has said just earlier today that he won't do it, but I think his colleagues will persuade him to do it anyway.

Rumors of a McCarthy-Ellers affair are trending on Facebook.

Paul Ryan wants to be president one day, IMO. This job would be toxic for those ambitions. He would rather work for the GOPe behind the scenes and mask it with show votes.

Nobody talks about Peter King. He is probably the only sitting member of Congress who enjoys the stature of Statesman.

Yes he has some liberal tendencies (he does represent NYC) and might not be the least bit interested, but he commands respect from even the most strident conservative.

I wanted King to run for President in 2016.

F - it. I will do the damn job. Plus I have a pair of balls and am not afraid to use them. Since you don't have to be a member of Congress anyhow I might as well take a stab at it.

Wow.. I didn't see that one coming.

I don't think the threat of the affair had anything to do with it, though Owl.

My guess is that McCarthy knows he wouldn't get 218 on the first ballot, and as such someone else would surpass him on the 2nd and later ballots and his stature takes a massive hit (like it can get worse than being known as the non-Crying Boehner). My guess right now is that the GOP power brokers will try for Chaffetz

Bottom line is for someone like me who has been so fed up with the establishment this is truly a breath of fresh air. So many of us are just done with these clowns and the more stuff like this that happens the better. The tide may very well be turning finally.

I'm trying to remember, has anyone ever been speaker and then gone to president? If anybody has, who was the last one to do so? Gerald Ford was minority leader and wanted to move up to speaker, but republicans never took the majority. And of course, he was never elected president, just appointed VP and moved up from there.

You must be as old as me to remember that. I recall watching Nixon make the announcement to Congress and the first thing the commentators said was Ford always wanted to be speaker.

My favorite President. Campaigned on three issues, got elected, got those three issues done, didn't run for a second term, went home, died.

There is a lot to be said in favor of the man, and of his approach to politics. Would that his kind was still amongst us today.

If Paul Ryan has ambitions to be president, he sure has a peculiar way of pursuing them.

King is too old to run for President. His district is in the Suffolk/Nassau part of Long Island, most definitely Not NYC. But his "liberal tendencies" have definitely grown over time.
