House Speaker vote later this week
Looks like Kevin McCarthy will probably get the nod to replace Boehner but it's not a done deal quite yet. Jason Chaffetz, the ex-BYU place-kicker, announced yesterday he's going to run too and that might steal a few votes away from McCarthy, especially after McCarthy made a pretty bad speaking blunder last week of essentially saying the Benghazi Commission was strictly put in place to hurt Hillary Clinton's popularity.

I think McCarthy will get the nod, but he already rubs me the wrong way. Maybe because I'm old enough to remember the Hollywood character actor Kevin McCarthy, who often played the villain in movies and TV shows, or swarmy rich guy. And this Kevin McCarthy kind of strikes me the same way. Chaffetz seems more reasonable to me, but I suspect McCarthy ends up being the guy.

As long as there's a Dem in the White House and at least 41 in the Senate, no GOP House Speaker will be able to appease the base.

I think some compromise along with winning some battles would appease the base. Giving the democrats everything they want will not. Put a budget on the president's desk to veto, before the 11th hour, and you can negotiate from there.

How are you going to get a budget to the presidents desk to veto if you can't get it out of the senate? Compromises have to take place before that point and anything controversial, like defunding the ACA or PP, will not get through the senate.

You only need 51 votes in the senate to pass a budget. How do you think Newt and Lott were able to send so many to Clinton? The problem is Boehner and McConnell are 100% onboard and involved with Obama's agenda. They use meaningless show votes and make excuses to mask it and get reelected.

Chaffetz is a confusing creature. He started as a hard liner ... but has made a hard left turn the last 2-3 years. I'm not sure what the hell he truly believes any more.

He has only himself to blame.

He, Karl Rove, and Fox News blame us, the voters just like the rest of their dying ilk.

Eric Cantor was an arrogant prick, and was completely disconnected from the people that put him into office.

And that makes him different from the other 534 in what way?

He has an interesting background. I know he is a vicious congressional committee interrogator.

To be honest, I know McCarthy's the early favorite.. but I REALLY get a feeling a lot of people are gonna go for Chaffetz or Webster.

I don't think it's as in the bag for McCarthy as some are making it out to be.

It clearly isn't in the bag. Boehner postponed the vote to November.
