Paul Daugherty: Bearcats, Ruckus dismiss Hurricanes
Excellent write up .
http://www.cincinnati.com/story/sports/c.../73184996/
Taft Road looks like the parking lot at Best Buy on Black Friday. Vehicles jammed up, all decked out in. . . Bearcats stuff? Flags and pennants and people leaning out their windows, faces painted red and black and. . . and. . .
There's no wreck.
It's fans.
What hath Hayden Moore wrought?
The redshirt freshman quarterback who threw for 557 yards in a loss at Memphis last Thursday wasn't the sole proprietor of this phenomenon, of course. Nippert Stadium is reborn, the game against (the other) Miami is on national TV, the Bearcats have an offense that does the electric TD slide about every other play.
They haven't been terrific this year, but they've captured your imagination. They took it further Thursday night, delighting the suddenly considerable faithful with a 34-23 win over the previously unbeaten Miami Hurricanes. An on-campus record crowd watched.

We have been really fun to watch, even in defeat. A few friends of mine aren't UC fans but they loved the last 2 games. ESPN must be happy as well.

I wonder what the viewership/rating for last night was?

RE: Paul Daugherty: Bearcats, Ruckus dismiss Hurricanes
Only knock on "the ruckus" I had was that in the pregame Miami allows any players that want to pray on their own to go to their end zone and take a knee on their own terms...Maybe 30 of them took a knee, held hands , etc...our student section was brutal towards them.. Chanting and yelling stuff and throwing things at people who are having a quiet moment of thanks and reflection was uncomfortable to watch. Things get chippy at the south end zone nowadays. Even on full houses in the past it was not like this.
The yellow mental health awareness week signs turned into 100s of projectiles and paper airplanes for the more industrious.

I agree, but Miami players took it upon themselves earlier (and I think even before they prayed) by taunting the student section. That probably wasn't the best spot.

About 100K more than what we got last week for Memphis (1.25M viewers).
Going against the Steelers and Ravens is a tough draw.

I did not notice the taunting. its the spot we give all visiting teams on purpose. Can get a little rough during the night games.

I could be wrong, but at least point in one time it appeared the Miami players were offering "acknowledgement" to the student section, which is behavior I've only seen once before, and that was from Teddy Bridgewater.

Yeah, there is/was video of the taunting at espn.com (they had quite a few cool vids from the game I've mentioned in several threads but I don't know to link them up and I can't even find that one in particular any more.) It seemed like an organized effort and basically the whole team was involved it looked like. It was a bit bizarre and striking that they would do that in this age where spiking the ball after a TD is apparently a penalty.
I assume the praying came after that, but yeah I wish the students would just leave that alone based upon your comment (along with dumping the "FU" type chants although I don't know if they did those last night or not.)

That's what I saw as well, but I think ESPN no longer has the video.
But, yes, it looked like the entire team was in on it the first time, then even before they kneeled down to pray there I thought there was interaction.
My point is this: You taunt, then suddenly go into prayer stance, I hardly think it's all on the UC students.

It seemed to me that coming over for praying right in front of the students after the earlier taunting seemed less like prayer and more like additional taunting to me. At the time, I did not view it as legitimate prayer but more show.

My take is that the Miami players were practically begging the UC student section to bring it on.

It's the U, what are they praying for, more hookers, blow, and some boosters to pay for their girl friend's abortions?

It was legit. Same thing Va Tech did with their guys before the bowl game. Lot of teams do it. In end zone away from coaches and the rest of the team for as little or as long as they choose. Now was it the same guys, dunno.
If they taunted earlier that is just stupid by Miami.
As far as our own behavior, I do fear that student section is taking on a bit of a blue and white crosstown shootout-esque hue for these night games. The FU and other colorful chants are probably not the image we want to broadcast either. Have fun and be rowdy but lets not be dicks.

Really glad that team did not leave Nippert with a win. They are the syphilitic chancre at the south end of college football. I did not like seeing the students rush the field, but I can't blame them after seeing the pregame taunting vid.

Agreed. That video (the 21 second clip) shows Miami taunting the student section pretty clearly in a coordinated manner. Definitely can't do that then expect quiet time for prayer in return.
