My take is that the Miami players were practically begging the UC student section to bring it on.

I *think* the video is still here, at the bottom of this page: http://espn.go.com/college-football/team/_/id/2132

Agreed. That video (the 21 second clip) shows Miami taunting the student section pretty clearly in a coordinated manner. Definitely can't do that then expect quiet time for prayer in return.

After the initial taunting - which is the most coordinated and aggressive I've ever seen at a college football game - they came back later for "prayer." I was watching them and it was my impression that some of the Miami players were still jawing with the students. That's why I was surprised to see the players start to take a knee. To me, the whole taunt-then-pray thing was such an odd twist of behavior.

I'm usually one of the first to lead the charge about civil behavior and sportsmanlike conduct at sporting events, but in this case Miami was literally asking for the abuse.

I don't mind what the Miami players did -- looked like it was all in good fun. But yeah, you can't face the crowd like that and not expect to get some back, regardless of what you do immediately after.

It's a bizarre turn. I'm glad ESPN caught the provoking action so I don't feel so bad about our students behavior during Miami's "prayer" time.

You know what? Taunting, praying, chanting, chest beating, dancing, pointing, whatever. It's a football game! Don't get me wrong, there are limits to this, but what really counts, happens on the football field. What happens pre-game in the center of the field or in an end zone is fluff. We took care of business Thursday night and Miami did not.

I agree but that was the Temple game and the university took preventive steps so it wouldn't happen again. I was wondering if the taunts would provoke that but I didn't hear it Thursday.

Chanting and yelling stuff and throwing things at people who are having a quiet moment of thanks and reflection was uncomfortable to watch. Things get chippy at the south end zone nowadays. Even on full houses in the past it was not like this.

The yellow mental health awareness week signs turned into 100s of projectiles and paper airplanes for the more industrious.

It's the U, what are they praying for, more hookers, blow, and some boosters to pay for their girl friend's abortions?

Agree in that instance, and as I said, there are limits that require taking steps to insure safety above all else. My point is folks are making way too much of Miami players stomping and praying and hooting. Those actions certainly didn't impact the game. The play on the field did.

I didn't see anybody making a big deal of the Miami players stomping and praying and hooting or claiming it impacted the game. There was a legitimate post mentioning some fans in the student section apparently behaving poorly towards some Miami players praying. Others responded by adding a context to it that many didn't know about (the taunting of the student section by the Miami team just prior to the prayer which also wasn't shown on the tv broadcast).

Similarly, I haven't seen anyone endorsing the "FU" chants or throwing things on the field.

There were no "quote" marks around prayer. That is what it was.

When I saw a couple drinks thrown into the end zone and the cursing chants started and the bearcat mascot trotted over waiving to stop between the students and kneeling players, enough is probably enough. Perhaps I'm a fuddy duddy. No defending that behavior, IMO. We want to turn in to UNC Charlotte back in the day throwing quarters and cursing at players I guess I'll pass.

Taunting & praying is a confusing mix. The U has an identity crisis.
