Grew up being taught not to like either and I don't. Both sets of fans are arrogant jerks. Now, I have met some of both that were very nice. But most are jerks. I went to grad school with a girl at Memphis and she will not speak highly of Memphis at all she went to undergrad at ut and PhDs from arky. She speaks highly of both of those schools and considers Herself a sec girl. If anyone thinks they don't care about Memphis then you are fooling yourself.

I've said some of this before but for those who are new or don't remember here goes.
When I was a freshman in the band (1968) our first road game was at UTK. I had no feelings whatsoever about them either way. After we got there and checked into the hotel, we went to the practice field on campus to rehearse our half time show. Our "hosts" watered the field so we were trodding around in thick mud. After we left the bog we were trying to get back to the hotel. They had barricaded some of the streets so we had to go through frat row. The frat boys were lined up on both sides throwing all kinds of crap at us, including oranges. Yelling all kind of nasty things.

At the game they threw more stuff at us. Threw open mustard packets on our band uniforms and hit one of our people with a Jack Daniels bottle. (No, it WASN'T empty. After the game, as we were walking back to the buses more crap.

As for "Missippi", for some reason they think that they are superior to every one. They say that they are the Harvard of the South. What a bunch of B.S. They are a bunch of racist, arrogant pricks. The first Tiger vs Rebel game I went to I found out HOW racist they were. They had a cheer that went like this--"2-4-6-8-(Nwords) go to Memphis State. True.

And the hillbillies the the rest of this state aren't any better. Most everyone east of Jackson, TN call Memphis "Memfrica".

By and large, UT fans are arrogant. For years, their program has been very good and we have been poor. Their fans that live hear in Memphis relish every opportunity to rub our faces in it. Most of these arrogant jerks that do this don't go to the games. They can't afford to drive across the state and attend a game. What this means to me is that these fans are simply fans of smearing Memphis fans.

But the big difference is this. Anybody can be a UT fan. It is so easy to pull for a well funded winner in the best conference in the country. It takes character to be a Memphis fan and go to games with the history that we have had.

I like OM. They have some arrogant fans too. But not nearly as bad. I pull for OM most of the time. I'd pull for Iran over UTK.

If you went to school at UTK and are a fan, I completely understand that. If you go to a game or 2 a year at UTK and pull for Memphis when you can, I get that. If UTK is your school and you pull for Memphis except when UTK is playing us, I get that. But, if you pull for UTK and you can't go to the games and you have a home town school that you hate on, then the only thing that I get out of that is -- you are a hater. You are an arrogant jerk.

Care to guess what I see the most?

If anyone needed a reason, just YouTube the "F you Florida" chants at last year's football game.

Exactly. The last time we beat ole miss, some ole miss fans I know and had to work with, mentioned to me, the only reason Tigah High won was because Tiger (Nword) were faster than our (Nword). Didn't surprise me though, just the way they are down there, and to this day, some, not all still hold those racist beliefs. Not much better at UTK either (Reference to Memphis as, Memfrica). Sad.

The UT fans I cant stand are the ones who never went to school there, never lived in Knoxville, and many have never set foot in Neyland. Their delusions of Tennessee football are hysterical. TN isn't the powerhouse program they think they are. You'll never see Alabama, Oklahoma, Fla State, Texas, USC, Ohio St and the other real CFB powers have a stretch like the Vawls have had with multiple losing seasons under multiple coaches.

I know a handful of UT alums. They seem to be more tolerable. Got a family member who went there. His wife is a Memphis grad. He roots for the Tigers when they aren't playing UT and even wears blue when he goes to games with me. He called their losses to OU and UT this year.

My favorite story of interaction w/ Tennessee fans - we were at a friends a few years ago watching UT/ UCLA football with a bunch of TN fans. UCLA had these commercials of their former athletes remembering their "UCLA Moment". I said "maybe they'll show Kevin Love and his will be when CDR teabagged him on a dunk in the Final 4". For some reason, that upset the urnge folks. It really escalated when I reminded them on how many Final 4s they have.

As for Ole Miss - got a bunch of friends who are alums. Most "hate" Memphis only to get me stirred up. It used to infuriate them when Memphis was rolling in hoops under Calipari. Had a guy I used to be friends with who always wanted to bet a case of beer that Memphis wouldn't make the NCAAs. He had to change his parameters to "y'all wont make the elite 8". I won a few hundred off one of his bozo OM friends with the wins over Miss St, Mich St, Texas, UCLA. Fool wouldn't take Kansas They're mostly harmless especially when you remind them of their lone sweet 16 and national irrelevance in football until lately.

When I come back for visits, I usually hit Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas...where all my family resides.

Memphis, whether you wanna believe this or not, is an oasis in the middle of old beliefs--beliefs that cannot stand in anyone's improved future. I love my supremely racist Mississippi family and my supremely inbred Ozarkians too....but thank God for Memphis, where education, intelligence, tolerance, music and sports combine to move people in a better direction. Obviously, I'm ignoring the utk grad cousins when I say Memphis.

I saw a guy in Walmart the other day with a weather stained UT hat. He was obviously a hard working guy, torn jeans, nasty shirt, unshaven, but not a derelict, just a guy with a hard life and hard job, or so it appeared. And not somebody who had just been out landscaping his yard; the dirt under his fingernails was growing potatoes. His truck had UT stickers all over it. I thought about asking him what years he went there, but didn't have the heart.

He probably does love UTK and probably dreams that he went there, but I know, since I did go there, that the snots in Knoxville would shun him like a two-day dead skunk.

At the G’Town Post Office with an obnoxious UTK Fan

I went to the post office in Germantown yesterday and walked in behind a guy in an Orange UTK shirt while I had on my Blue GO TIGERS Shirt. I wasn’t going to say anything to him until we walked up to our prospective mail boxes and we were standing right next to each other.

So I said “Good luck tomorrow partner. It’s going to be a great game”.

This ******* turned around, looked at my "GO TIGERS" shirt, and said “We don’t need luck”.

I am a father of two and time after time I have demonstrated to those around me that I am an extremely patient and a non-provocative man. There are 1000 things I wish I would have said to the man or not said anything at all. But my mouth spewed forth hatred.

I blurted out “We’ll see tomorrow d!ck he@d” as he walked away.

But why couldn’t he have just said “yeah”. Or “Yeah, good luck to you too”. Why did he have to be a smartass?

This is why I hate UTK and it's cocky and arrogant fans. I really believe the folks from Knoxville (or from here riding the coat-tails of East Tennessee) think they are better than us.

We even have fans here who give you a hard time for poking them, while ignoring the truly nasty terms like Memfrica thrown our way- that term coming from fans down below too. Agendas. And shameful.

UT grads aren't that bad its the t-shirt fans that are annoying but really they've been quiet the last 5-6 years so its hard to hate on them. Old Piss fans are the worst because they are arrogant but that's not really it. Their arrogance is even more annoying because they have ZERO credibility to back it up. At least bUTtchuggers won a legit national championship in the last 50 years.

I hate OM because I had family and friends growing up who were OM fans. They (not some, but all), were the most annoying, pretentious rednecks I've ever known. Racist, ugly people, to the core.

Yet, these same people that derided Memphis State throughout the year, would watch/cheer for Memphis Tiger basketball, come November-March.

I know I'm in the vast minority, but I never developed a HATRED for UT. I wanted to beat them, but I never had a really bad experience with Vol fans, for the most part. But, I left Memphis in 1989, so maybe I'd have a different perspective if I still lived there?
