I have said this about FEDEx before & it is not well received here, but FedEx does what it does for our university always with a deference to the city. City politicians always have their collective hands out for FedEX money & FedEx wants a cooperative city government toward the desires of FedEx (zoning, taxes, etc), therefore FedEx plays the politics and reaches out to our university but virtually always through the city. At OM, FedEx can work directly with university officials and not be concerned so much about politics in terms of sides taken & allegiance

What our university needs is a separate identity from the city when it comes to facilities & funding - because our university's needs are increasingly divergent from those of the city. And to accomplish that separate identity, our university needs a group of donors who are not also tied to the city, not involved in the city politics & not concerned with city politics relative to their interests. Ironically, the city of Memphis, in terms of government, is its own worst enemy. The city would in fact benefit much more if they would get their collective fingers out of our university's revenues & allow the university to flourish under its own direction, which would benefit the city immeasurably more than a continual meddling in university facilities decisions.

Memphis has probably never been seriously discussed for the SEC; however, the SEC teams did feel threaten in the past. I don't know the details, but some do. It goes something like this. Sometime in the 1960s a political deal was cut where for the Tigers to get help from the city for basketball they had to demise football.

I don't hate either one, but love it when they lose.

There is a reason we are infested in this board with fans of other schools. They care about Memphis.

Many of them have bigger other rivals....Moo or Florida for example. But they care....a lot. That was either a nice sneaky backwards dig nor just a minor mistake. Not one way.

They hate the city and by proxy the school. Our last game got a 30-something page thread on the UTK board.

I agree completely that they don't consider us rivals but you're fooling yourself if you don't believe they hate our city and school and detest any success or positive for either.

the ones you know or associate with may not say it or show it but UT fans do hate Memphis. Those who don't are in a very small minority or is a hybrid UT football fan/Memphis basketball fan.

There is a mentality of hate that is visceral.

I got 5 utk cousins who grew up across the street. They purposely scheduled their weddings the first weekend of March Madness, back when everyone knew vols would never make it to the tourney.

We skipped their weddings. So I know full well the price of hate/rivalry. lol.

We had this discussion tonight at a family get-together - our various experiences with both UMiss and UT fans seem to say that fans of both that live in or near Memphis are much more negative than our experiences with Miss fans in Oxford and UT fans in Knoxville. I remember when UT beat us in Knoxville on a last second field goal, most of the fans on the way out were very complimentary of the Tigers, yet when we played a close game here at the Liberty Bowl, we almost got in a fight. I've been to Neyland 4 times now and have never really met a bad fan.

The last game I went to in Neyland when Memphis played (DWill was on the team but hurt), the fans smashed my sunglasses and insulted everyone in blue. This has played a huge part of my dislike of UTK. The other being their absolute worship of Peyton Manning who accomplished nothing, but their complete lack of interest in Tee Martin who led then to a national championship. Plus most of the fans I was surrouded by while living in Knoxville were absolutely arrogant asshats.

I never had much hatred for Ole Miss (I was born in Mississippi). Went down to a game in Oxford when DWill played and didn't run into anyone there negative. But I consider them more of a rivarly than UTK due to distance and the amount of games the two have played.

Don't hate UTK, just don't like them, at all, and am glad when they lose.

Never really cared for Ole Miss one way or the other. Their fans are rather, how can I put it, a bunch of preppy, pink pants wearing, spoiled little b!tches who's living off daddy's pocket book. Now their girls, well that's a different matter (never saw a bed they didn't like, or a shade tree for that matter). What I do hate about Ole Miss, is that @ss hat coach they have named Hugh Freeze. He was a prick at Briarcrest at Arky St. and now at Ole Miss. Like someone else said in another post, He'd sell his grandmother if it benefited his personal gain. Calapari's a boy scout compared to this scum bag. Won't be long before he has Ole Miss under investigation and probation. Couple years ago when Ole Miss had a top 5 recruiting class. All these top rated players all of a sudden want to go to that great power house, Ole Miss? Yea right.

Just grew up that way, and can't take the arrogance of their fans. Too much bad blood over the years, with the snickering, referencing tiger high, keys shaking from ole miss fans when they are winning, and oranges from tennesse fans, plus the bs about scheduling games on and off too much. In addition, we are even lucky to get any press in their newspapers as they never say anything about anybody else except other teams in the sec.
