For reference:

NCSU - ODU had no turnovers
435 yards
4.9 ypc rushing
9-16 on 3rd down

Clemson - App four turnovers including a pick 6
392 yards
3.2 ypc rushing
5-15 on 3rd down

Those stats tell me App should have the edge on defense. ODU's secondary may be better than App's however.

I'd actually say both are fairly equal. Lets not kid ourselves, the weather will make this game on Saturday ugly and will equalize the teams.

Personally I would say NC State's offense is superior. Everyone is judging them off of past years. Doeren has some of his guys in there now and they look GOOD.

Quarterback: I give the edge to NC State. Brissett has been the most accurate passer in the country this year and never turns the ball over. Doubters should take a look at last year's game against FSU. Let me just say Brissett outplayed Winston by a lot.

Running Backs: Edge no doubt goes to NC State. Don't need to provide evidence as you can look at the stats.

Receivers: EHHHH probably clemson but NC State has some young playmakers.

TE: Not sure if Clemson uses one but Jaylen Samuels from NC State is a superstar.

Oline: Not sure.

This is really meaningless to look at though as it ignores matchups/styles. NC State is just a bigger/stronger team that could line up vs. us and methodically run down our throat. They also have a talented dual threat QB. Clemson is more of a spread/mis direction team that tries to get players in space. Personally, I believe we would match up better vs. Clemson than NC St on defense.

Either way, you really cant compare teams this way. I think App State is a solid team, but you guys are hanging your hat too much on the performance vs. NC State. College teams just change week to week and sometimes things just click. (kinda like your second half last year vs. first half)

We tend to wear down defenses by rotating fresh backs in, usually, defenses hold them in check our first 2 or 3 series, and it looks like it will be a long day running the ball, but gradually, all these backs wear a defense down, and by mid third, they are picking up huge chunks of yds. I think it will be one of the keys to this game, ODU needs to count on the 2nd string players coming in and giving the starters some breathers, if they cant, and the starters play most of the game, I thing App slowly wears your defensive front down, and we start running the ball effectively in the 3rd and 4th quarter.

Yeah, we have the same thing at RB; possibly our deepest position (behind maybe WR) The impressive thing about our defense this year is the depth and in years past we were really worn down with FBS schools in the 2nd half. Because we essentially rotate 8-10 guys along the DL, we have been better at holding up over the course of the game and I didn't see a worn down defense against NC State; these guys were still hanging tough.

One of the things I was encouraged about was the size of our wideouts vs. their small secondary, but the rain may be a deterrent there.

Also, it will be interesting to see a team that is actually smaller than us. We are so used to playing teams that are bigger. Our entire line will be over 300 pounds at some points on Saturday. While, you guys have good size at NT, your DEs are the same size as our freshman DEs and one of the starting linebackers is 195 pounds. I don't mean that to diss you guys, just an observation as App State won't be a team that will be able to physically manhandle us like NC State was.

RE: Week 4 vs App State
we don't worry about size, other than State you will not play a more athletic, and quicker defense than us, plus they are very well coached, Nate Woody, sadly is going to be coaching at the P5 level very soon, he is just too good to not get noticed. Clemson with all their 4 and 5 star OL, all over 300 lbs couldn't move us off the line, (only averaged 3.2 yds a carry) our speed created a lot of problems, your backs and qb will probably have a hard time making it to the edge, we have great sideline to sideline speed, running between the tackles is probably you best option, which could be a problem if we have the bad weather comes in. I'll say this, if we see 40 miles an hour winds, and driving rain, the receivers on both teams might as well stay in the locker rooms, it will probably come down to our speed against your size.

I love the "hot hot hot" as the students are in the library in the winter coats.

Actually recently went over to your neck of the woods and took the kids to Tweetsie Railroad, Grandfather Mnt, etc..... Enjoyed it. My guess is that by October-- 5000 feet up the mountain it is not hot hot hot.
let's hope your football team isn't hot this weekend!

RE: Week 4 vs App State
We don't run side to side like Clemson does. We run inside zone.

We faced some pretty tough defenses last year; Marshall, La Tech, FIU, NC State, and Vandy were all better defenses than App State. I would be really shocked if App State's defense is better/quicker than NC State, Marshall, or FIU.

We may lose Saturday as we really haven't hit our stride offensively yet. But, I don't think App State is a better team than Western Ky, Marshall, NC State. I would compare you guys to FIU of last year.

RE: Week 4 vs App State
It is hard to know what to expect in this game.

ODU has been inconsistent on both sides of the ball.

App St. has only played two games and both were obvious mismatches in terms of talent.

For ODU to win, they need to execute much better on offense. I'm sure App St. will be able to move the football, everyone does, but they might be a little careless. ODU's defense has been much more successful this year getting pressure on the QB and App St.'s doesn't appear very mobile. Additionally, the defense has been very physical and the increased depth has helped. A turnover or two could be the difference.

Thus far turnovers seem to be the largest difference between the two teams.

RE: Week 4 vs App State
It will come down to one thing again...can ODU's offensive line open up holes to get the running game going ? To me if this weather prediction holds...the only option will be to run, run, run. The team that wins the battle in the trenches will win the game. Both teams will stack the box defensively.

LB is a defensive strength of ASU, especially the two inside LBs (Boggs 6-3 235, Law 6-0 230). I would guess that the 195 lb OLB (soph Devan Stringer) is more of a rover and he has 3 QB hits in the two games. Overall, ASU's defense in more proven and much more experienced than ODU's.

Both teams have RBs with breakaway capabilities. Cox has a 68 yd run and Upshaw a 52 yd run. Also, ASU has also used 3 WRs to run the ball in their 2 games.

ODU's lack of TOs to date would seem to be a real advantage given the weather forecast. ODU's O-line has a considerable size advantage over the ASU D-line, but ASU will likely follow NCSU's game plan and bring SS Middleton up to help fill gaps.

Note; if the rain is lighter than predicted or intermittent, there will be opportunities to pass towards the gameday building and/or the West sidelines. How Bentley (and our suddenly suspect WR corps) performs in these conditions are impossible to forecast.

RE: Week 4 vs App State
the forecast seems to be the the biggest factor in this game, rain isn't so bad, but if we get 40 plus winds, nobody is going to be throwing the football more than 10 or 15 yds down the field, just too hard, and risky for a true freshman, and a sophomore qb to try deep routes too often, means both teams will bring up 7,8, maybe even 9 guys within 5 yds of the line to take away the run. If the weather comes in like predicted, this is going to be one ugly game, probably with a lot of turnovers.

The wind could actually be an ODU advantage...it's been blowing NE 15-25+ all week. ODU should be well practiced for the conditions come Saturday.

Rain, different story.

Well, they've already been through a rain game this year. I imagine they learned plenty and will be better prepared.

The flooding in the Larchmont area can be horrible. The article in the VP has BW (or maybe another ODU person) stating that Foreman Field sits high and the field drains well. Well that's just dandy while all the lots and roads around are three or four feet under water!

Likely staying home for this one guys. 4 hours one way to sit in 40mph winds, rain and flooding is more than even I can justify, much less talk Mrs. Monarx into. Cheer extra loud. I expect I'll be one of many not showing and this game is huge.
