Have we ever faced a #1 ranked team before?
Curious, more from a stats and facts standpoint. Can someone get the boys in the lab working on this for me?

2 times. Miami in the 80's and Ohio State in mid 2000's....it....uh....didn't go well.
NIU got shut out at Miami in 1986 (34-0, the consensus being their coach took it easy on NIU, didn't see a box score) and Ohio State won 35-12 in 2006 ( NIU-OSU Box score 2006)

We played Nebraska too and they were number 1 right, in 88, or 89?

NIU did put up a good fight against #4 Michigan in 2005, they just turned the ball over a BILLION TIMES. ( NIU-Michigan box score)
Between that game and the Northwestern game....man, 2005 could've been a HUGE year.

According to the media guide, those were the only 2 games against number one. Nebraska was #4 in 1989.

Thanks!
Just looked up the 1986 year. Yikes. 2-9, but the schedule is a buzzsaw of a schedule. Would love to have that kind of scheduling now. (yeah I know we were independent that year. )
that 2006 game, i remember. guess i didn't realize they were no. 1 at the time. I remember it being pretty close (or at least closer than the Wisconsin game at Soldier Field... woof!)

That game. Totally different game if Wolfe doesn't fumble in Michigan territory late in the half and Shatone doesn't muff the punt right before the half.

Except for the HUGE mistakes, NIU played them even. I mean, that's a huge if, but still. Frustrating.

I remember reading the postgame interviews after the 1986 Miami game. Jimmy Johnson said something like, "I give those Huskies a lot of credit. They really came down here and kicked our butts (sic)."
I believe that record still stands as the worst butt-kicking ever received by a team that eventually won the game by a score of 34-0, while never even playing their starting QB.

If memory serves me correct we only got into their territory once.

Phil Horvath was the QB in both the Michigan game and OSU game. Garrett Wolfe was the only offense NIU had.

Agree with what has been said, but this OSU team is pretty special, so many weapons. It will be a special task for NIU to leave with a W. I believe in my Huskies, anything can happen, but you have to remain grounded as well.

Didn't those teams go like 7-5? You're kidding, right?

Pretty sure the last time we faced them was the year Troy Smith won the Heisman and Ted Ginn was crazy good in college. That team had some damn good players.

Tressel called off the dogs in that game, and Wolfe was able to shake loose quite a bit and keep it exciting. But make no mistake, we would not have stopped OSU all day in 2006 had they not let off the gas.

Yeah, I was there and I remember Teddy Ginn running right by our secondary on one of the first few offensive plays for them and he was gone. There was no one on the team that could run with him.

Change those DB's numbers to 29 and 24 and it's like a look into the future.
