What's worse is our passing game is very poor. I guess DB is waiting for a good passing series from Driphus.
Reading through the thread post-game. That's kind of what I figured was going on at the time. Jackson was sacked a few times and was pressured a few more, and we didn't look like we were in synch throwing the ball, with a few exceptions. To me at least.
At the time I thought Bailiff was looking for one more good series/insurance score, and wanted DJ to get it.
I don't mind Bailiff leaving DJ in. If DJ was 18/20 with 3TD going into the 2nd half I think he would've been on the bench. But he looked a little off and he acknowledged that in his post game comments. I expect a big game from him next week. We are lucky to have such a mature QB going into Austin next weekend.

Another plus is our fitness level. A lot of our guys (DJ in particular) look a lot stronger than last year. And while it was unfair to expect Wagner to be able to handle the humidity, I didn't see one Rice guy go down in the game after Davis limped off on that first series. I'm really impressed with what the S&C programs have done in football and men's basketball.

I watched most of the UT-ND game - UT's true freshman LB Jefferson is going to be trouble for Rice next weekend - he was in the ND backfield alot. IMO, he was the only bright spot for UT last night. Swoopes did not look impressive, to me.

RE: Rice vs Wagner Game thread
Finished watching the game last night after taping it...GREAT WIN while it was what we all expected is still a win.
Positives:
1.) Running game - Walter was explosive. We were pushing them five yards down field before they got to our RB's.
2.) German - amazing speed and great zip on the ball he threw. Looked confident and can extend the play. Fits our offense great.
3.) Womac - was in the backfield plenty.
4.) Special teams - solid, looked much faster than previous years. I expect to see several TD's from our punt and kick off guys.
Negatives:
1.) Passing game - several reasons, dropped passes, DJ not very accurate and hanging onto the ball too long, blitz not picked up. Does not matter, just not very efficient. Most of the passing yards came on two passing plays.
2.) Left starters in too long, we then took German out and brought in the Wild Owl package. We need to give our QB's all the reps they can get. DJ only had 16 passes when Taylor was a senior then he looked awful against Mississippi State when he was brought in. He was not ready.
3.) Wagner was able to run on us, scares me against Texas.
4.) Davis getting hurt, we will need him. He is an every down RB.

Parks will hopefully be playing next week. Expected more from Mayden, but he did not get targeted a lot. I have yet to review the video though.
Although it was hot as a bear, it was a lot of fun out there in HRS yesterday. No complaints, because at least we don't have to wear suits like fans did in the 50's.

yeah but, the games in the 50's didn't start until mid-late September and kickoff was at 7pm until at least mid-October

RE: Rice vs Wagner Game thread
As a supporter of the MOB for many years, (hell I was up with them in the endzone after the infamous eATMe game in 1973), to be brutally honest, they have just been horrible for the better part of the last decade, maybe longer. About one show every other year has been entertaining with the rest being rift with inside jokes that no more than a handful understand or just general silliness and stupidity. What at one time was a witty, mostly hilarious band that was representative of the school has become, sadly, an embarrassment. Granted they probably don't have the support they need, but if the scripts can get fixed, perhaps the rest will follow.

Is this standard operating procedure? I understand that a school's band takes up seats, but sheesh, doing that just seems cheap.
There is a whole thread on Texags about the Mob not going. They even talked of starting a gofundme because they wanted to see the Mob make fun of what's going on in Austin.

It appears too that there will be empty seats at most Texas games this year so it's not like they need those seats for someone else.
If Charlie Strong is on the hotseat, Steve Patterson doesn't seem far behind.

Scott Van Pelt had a feature on the Longhorns and their performance and attendance woes during his SportsCenter gig last night. Sounds like Patterson is on a much shorter leash than Strong. Patterson apparently raised ticket prices 25% - 50%, and included a prohibition of season ticketholders reselling their tickets. As a consequence, they have 10,000+ empty seats.

Positives: Dillard, Walter, Stewart, DJ , German running. New young secondary (banks, ibe, white). LBs. new kickers looked pretty good. Womac.
Negatives: DJ passing. Receivers / tight ends getting open and catching the ball. Davis injury.
The two deep TDs Wagner got were somewhat fluke-y. First one Espinosa was in prime position for an INt or at least pbu but never reacted to the ball whatsoever even though it went about 6 inches above his helmet. Not sure what happened there, but it should be rare. On the second the victim was a freshman walk on against Wagner's top receiver. Simply overmatched and not a player likely to see meaningful PT.
Did they score on Espinosa? I thought that first touchdown was against Blasingame?
It was Espinosa
Our top 5 cornerbacks (banks, pollard, blasingame, bickham, Douglas) didn't really give up anything all day, except those bubble screens out of the strange tackles-split-wide formation
I'll add another positive: legitimate under center snaps! What a delight!

Most of the plays in question can be seen in this highlight package from the Wagner perspective.
Looks like Espinosa lost track of his man and the sideline once he turned his head back on the one TD. Should be a relatively easy technique fix.
Every sack on DJ was a missed block by an RB. Disappointingly two pretty bad ones by Dillard, who should be better at that at this point. Jowan's probably our best back in pass pro.

I'm glad you found that, because I saw the one play that bothered me - the sack at around 40 seconds. Something is off there, because the blocking is for a quick release. The LT didn't even block anyone, because the line was quick blocking down and he didn't have anyone in that gap, and the RB did a chop like a quick slant or curl was expected, which is also what the receivers on the left ran.
I originally thought the LT blew it releasing the DE, but looking at the blocking, that actually went well. But for some reason, Driphus looked right for a longer route, which the pass protection wasn't necessarily set to provide.
I'm sure there were some discussions about that play in the post-game review.
