A Marshall University football player charged with allegedly beating a gay couple in West Virginia last month has been kicked off the team and could now face federal hate crime charges.

School officials announced Wednesday that senior running back Steward Butler has been released from the team.

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Casey Williams, 20, and Zack Johnson, 21, said they were walking back to their hotel from a nightclub in Huntington. They kissed, and that's when a car pulled up and Butler allegedly began yelling anti-gay slurs from the vehicle's passenger seat.

“He called us faggots, queers, you name it,” Williams told Buzzfeed, adding that Butler and his party were strangers to them. “We were trying to ignore him, but he jumped out of the car and came running up to us.”

Two more men followed Butler out of the car, said Williams. Johnson, realizing a confrontation was about to happen, started taking photos and video.

“Butler punched [Johnson] in the ear and the temple area," Williams told Buzzfeed. "He was hitting to cause damage. It was one strike with a closed fist. Then he punched me in the head. It was on the face, in the cheek.”

My favorite story from the Doc Holliday era is the one where 3 Marshall football players robbed a pizza delivery man at their dorm at Marshall.

Hey...at least Doc kicks these type of kids off the team. O'l Ruff just slaps their hand and allows them to remain on the team.

Seriously, can your school transfer D's and F's? How does that person get by admissions?

Every school does shadyshit in the admission process; but how does you admission office allow D's and F's?

You are "speculating" that the kid got D's and F's.......I'm hearing that the kid simply quit showing up for classes. Why he quit showing up for classes?...I have no idea.

He was ruled academically ineligible.
http://www.si.com/college-football/2015/...ineligible

That is really, really hard to do at UNC. And no kid shows up for class at UNC; that is part of the deal. Think about it; they cheat to keep kids eligible at UNC, but they couldn't do anything for this kid.

You're a dumb***. First of all that dude didn't run up to a police offer and hit him. He was in a fight and hit the police offer trying to break it up. Second of all he spent 300 hours of punishment for it among other things. Third of all he didn't even play.

We literally just kicked a starting OL off for breaking team rules, wasn't even arrested. Kicked off a RB who wouldve competed for first string 2 months ago for smoking weed. Just keep saying bull**** and pretending Marshall is disciplined

Is this the guy you are talking about for smoking weed? According to this, it wasnt just about smoking weed. It was about a drug deal gone bad....

Yes, I was talking about a freshman walk-on who plays linebacker was going to compete for the starting running back posistion. You aren't going to find anything on Chris Mangus because he wasnt arrested either.

Here I'll help you out

Here you go. As you can see Foxx was also kicked off, plus Winters who I had forgot about. So thats 4 kicked off, 3 without being arrested. You look quite the dingus now

Okay then explain to me why Ruff allowed Montese Overtun to stay on the team after he was arrested and found guilty of animal cruelty? Thats just flat out sickening if you ask me.

If you're talking about the UNC kid, he probably didn't stop going to class... it's just that the class started actually meeting.

Lol you're really grasping now. How do you know he didn't tell his girlfriend to look after it but she didnt? It doesn't even matter, he served his time did what he needed to do and earned his way back onto the team. Being suspended indefinitely k's basically being kicked off with a chance to earn your way back on it
