B1G Hockey Expansion
Got word that the B1G is still looking to add The University of Toronto, McGill University and Arizona State as affiliate members for their hockey conference.
McGill University is a top 70 research institution world wide.
The University of Toronto is a top 24 research institution world wide.
Arizona State is being talked with because of the large population of B1G graduates that live in Phoenix, AZ. They feel it would be a great opportunity to expand BTN into that region of the country.
Some people may remember a couple of years ago when this was first reported.

The goal with BTN would be to get coverage in all three regions like they get coverage in New York.

RE: B1G Hockey Expansion
McGill and Toronto would have to become full DII members before they can be eligible for DI hockey.
Such a move would destroy the CIS, Canada's NCAA, which Canada would lay at the feet of Delany.
U of British Columbia contemplated a NCAA move several years ago, then came under extreme academic and national pressure to stay in the CIS.
If the Big Ten gets an exemption for Canadian schools to be allowed to sponsor DI hockey, but nothing else, could see it happenning.

Given the B1G's location, it shouldn't even have to leave the conference to find a couple candidates.

Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio State, Penn State, Rutgers, Wisconsin. That would be a great B1G hockey lineup.
Group North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin together and have them play a home and home series every year. Same for Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State, and Connecticut, Penn State and Rutgers.

UConn would only leave HE for the B1G if it meant a full invite was involved or I guess since we do need the money if it were much more lucrative than HE membership.

Agree with you. It would have to be part of a more encompassing move to make sense. Hockey East is the premiere college hockey conference and all but one of the away conference games are a bus ride. A move makes no sense except part of a larger plan, IMO

RE: B1G Hockey Expansion
why on earth would the B1G want toronto and mcgill for athletics? They could just for an academic association with those two an be done with it.
If they want more hockey members wouldnt it make more sense to add someone such as Denver and North Dakota? These schools have proven success and are already in the NCAA, and would IMO draw nice crowds
To me it makes the most sense for the B1G to convince some current members to add the sport

That's how I would see it to. UConn as a new full member, North Dakota as an affiliate for hockey only, and Illinois and Rutgers as existing members bringing their club programs up to D1.

Eagle, I honestly think UConn would consider (emphasize consider) the move even if not part of a larger, all-encompassing move. I say that as someone who loves LOVES Hockey East and am grateful to be in the league. I just think that if UConn were to get $2-3m per year to join B1G hockey they would have to seriously consider it given current economics.
That said, couldn't be more content in the Hockey East.

Has UCONN ever talked with the B1G about being an affiliate member for Hockey?
To make a hockey conference in the NCAA, you need 6 teams and that is what the B1G has right now. I don't know how many teams they want to expand to, but they are activatly working to expand the hockey conference.
Arizona State has until 2017 to join a conference and it is expected they eventually sign with the B1G or the conference in the Mountain West area.

AFAIU, its $1m per team from the BTN, but I just don't see UConn leaving Hockey East.
Illinois and Rutgers are moving their hockey up to NCAA Div1 when some wealthy donor makes them the kind of offer that helped Penn State move up ... and not until then.
Barring that, the only existing Big Ten school that seems to be in a position to consider it is Nebraska, which has an ice rink facility built into its new arena, and so would only need the practice facilities to make the move.
If Nebraska wanted to move up and was waiting on an 8th, perhaps Arizona State could make that 8th, but it would be more controversial than Johns Hopkins lacrosse as an affiliate, given Johns Hopkins academic clout.

If Coralville, a suburb of Iowa City, builds a new rink for "local" hockey teams, Iowa will almost certainly in the mix.
Ariz St does not want to be a permanent team in the BTHC, as they almost certainly want Arizona, Utah, UCLA etc to start teams.

Why would they want that? A substantial part of their "local" recruiting base for a Div1 school is based on there being so few Western Div1 hockey schools.

A PAC12 hockey league can attract kids from the north and provinces like Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan, as Canadians need an alternative of college rather than major junoirs. The west can support another league easily. The Midwest isn't necessarily prized as a premier recruiting ground, as Winnipeg and further west are the best in the world.

Would Denver jump at the chance at joining a western conference for hockey?

I think they would. Honestly they could help start a western conference today if they wanted to. As mentioned, it takes six teams to make a college hockey conference, and there are six teams in the west: Air Force, Alaska-Anchorage, Alaska-Fairbanks, Colorado College, Denver, and now Arizona State. I doubt a conference like that appeals Denver, but a conference of ASU, Denver, CC, and three other big name schools like Utah, Oregon, or Washington would most definitely be enough to bait Denver and CC.
