Yeah, I know. I'm just getting in my fun before my job "ramps up" in September. Then I'll be working long hours and probably wish I were flipping burgers or something. The past several months have been painful. Our civil and utility relocation contractors have screwed the track contract. I've had a lot of downtime to screw with our resident leftists.

We're about to wrap this one up and get marching orders for the next one. That's if the other ya know.

42.5 hours every week as my schedule, no O/T pay, and I even get work related phone calls when on vacation. All part of it. I do usually get a high 4 figure or low 5 figure bonus every Christmas though so its well worth it.

All I know is that I'm glad I don't work in investment banking. 80 hours a week is normal, 100 hours a week can be common.
I work 40 hours a week on salary and enjoy having a life.

It pays all my bills, I owe zero on any type of credit, and I get 3 days off each week...I guess your statement is true.
well, that leaves you free time to pass out brochures at fag rallies

I used to be a stockbroker, before the market collapsed in '08. Was let go in '09 as a result.
The hours sucked. The pay was overrated.

My uncle is an investment banker. He lives in Boston and commutes to NYC almost every day on a flight. He hates the hours and would love to quit, but he can't walk away from the comfort and financial security it provides his family.
As for me, I value my personal time way too much to voluntarily put in more than the required 40 hrs/wk. But I do get paid for overtime even though I'm salaried, so for the times I have to work more than 40 hours, at least I'm compensated for it.
It seems like good money, but then you realize they're getting paid less per hour than you are. I rather have the free time to work a side job or run my own business.

RE: 7 Day Work Week Comes to Wisconsin
I put my life on hold for about a year and half, working lots of extra hours (unpaid) and having a pager for when I wasn't at work (yes, this was a while ago) - so I never really got away from it. I'd rather have some free time and simply live comfortably.

....and.....?
I'm telling you. Be prepared for an avalanche of crap to be slung at Scott Walker. But nothing is going to stick. They are TERRIFIED of him.
If anything, this is a GOOD thing he did.
Wait. What?
There was a freaking LAW saying you couldn't work as much as you wanted? WHAAAAAAT?!?
What Country was this in?
What Country am I in?
good grief.

Why is the U.S. less productive than certain European states where people work less hours?

Define productive first.

Define productive first.
I'd use this definition:
Quote:Labor productivity measures the amount of goods and services produced by one hour of labor. More specifically, labor productivity measures the amount of real GDP produced by an hour of labor. Growing labor productivity depends on three main factors: investment and saving in physical capital, new technology and human capital.

Using this definition, a few European countries beat us out.

Oh...and I am very happy working 4 nine hour shifts and 36 hrs. I have no compulsion after 32 years to work on Friday...other than at my golf game.[/i]

RE: 7 Day Work Week Comes to Wisconsin
Smudge, perhaps one day your uncle will realize that 7 figures is not as important. Heck, my wife and I make about 85 together and we have a very easy and carefree lifestyle. We lack nothing and are able to donate to charities and help out our relatives with this money.
The minute you start living at that level you're done for. It's hard to get away from it. You start buying expensive items where simple ones would be just as good. For example: you buy a luxury Mercedes when a Chevy Impala would take you to the same places and cost much less to maintain. We got rid of our Volvo lifestyle (I know it's not a Mercedes) when it proved too expensive to repair. We could afford the repairs as we were making more money before retirement, but decided the car wasn't worth it.
As for working long hours, in my twenties everyone who worked with me worked 12 hour days without a day off for a full month, had one day off and started another month with the same hours. Everyone was dragging in the end especially the older workers. But man oh man, what paychecks. We didn't wish to do that again though.

I bet you if asked....most couples will admit that the best years of their lives happened when they had damn near nothing.

As long as it is the choice of the WORKER, government should have no say restricting someone from working longer hours if they so choose. Of course, it's up to the company, but it's good to see Gov. Walker getting GOVERNMENT out of the way.
We need more of that.
Sounds good keep government out of the hours truckers can be on the road, pilots can fly, train engineers cad drive a train. Let's keep it up to businesses to make that decision.
