I keep getting more and more impressed with Coach Withers. Granted this may all be an attempt to pad his resume but I feel he is genuine in establishing the right kind of culture at JMU. It's refreshing in this age of coaches compromising themselves to keep players on their team at any cost.
After one year ?
Yes you have to base it on something thus far EW has genuinely appeared to practice what he preaches and I would agree 100%. From the outside looking in and from comments from players that were at JMU under both coaches it seems like a positive change with regards to:
- culture
- emphasis on academics
- emphasis on accountability
- emphasis on discipline
And yes the product on the field is better and more entertaining as well.
Now HotRod I don't expect you to agree as someone that played under MM but these points seemed to be missing in the later years under MM.

LMAO has nothing to do with me playing under MM.
But MM and his staff preached all of those things to the team and not in public, but you can't compare a one year career to fifteen years. JMU culture is still the same , just a different head coach. We will know whats up by EW's 5th year here at JMU.

We'll never be Florida State or Texas but I for one am glad we can balance an attempt at success with at least a pretense of decorum, and mitigate having our reputation dragged through the mud. I mean seriously, does a Texas degree come with a shower cap and loofah to scrub that constant film of disgust off your body?
Longhorn response in 3... 2... 1...
Please don't pretend OU is clean 71, and don't quote 2Buck, it only encourages him.

Talk about random. WTF does any of what you posted have to do with Peak leaving?

Withers is a winner
The culture has changed immensley within the football program.
I am hopeful the accountants leading the athletic department atnd the diversity attorney we have as President will learn something from Withers.

I also think peak was battling an injury in the second half of the season, he was future talent.

Random? Is a player leaving a D-1 team to go to a community college part of the natural progression for a player? No? Then maybe without knowing for sure do you think perhaps there's even the most remote possibility his leaving has to do with Withers enforcing his culture? Maybe it was Peak's decision to leave but why at this point in the season and why to a community college?
So how is how a coach runs his program not pertinent to a player leaving? If you fail to see the connection then I can't help you. Withers seems to be willing to cut players and let players walk if they don't fit regardless of the player's talent. I'm sure his tough love isn't appreciated by players on the receiving end but in the long run it's for their betterment and the betterment of the team.
He was spending part of his time at the Charlotte caravan trying to network for possible job leads on behalf of a graduating player. This is a player who played ONE YEAR for him and is leaving his team this year. He owes that player nothing yet he's taking his personal time to help him out. Consider me impressed. I've been in sales, consulting and the business world for 25 years and my face to face instincts with him were completely different than the majority of other caravan participants. I like him.

I agree...some of these departures are curious but could be attributable to either grades / culture rules / or violation of team rules.

You added that you keep getting more and more impressed with Withers in regards to Peak leaving, yet despite your speculation, we don't know WHY Peak left. So if we don't know WHY he left, how can you say his leaving impresses you more with Withers?
How a coach runs his program isn't pertinent to a player leaving until we know WHY the player left. If you can't see that I can't help you...

Yea , academic issues for freshmen usually arise after a complete year.

I think he may have left on his own if he thought his situation was irrecoverable.
