Or what? Crawl back to the MWC? Not likely. Join the AAC?

(06-28-2015 12:11 PM)Kittonhead Wrote:  What I notice on BYU's schedule is 2 things:

1) Boise State has long grown up to the point where BYU considers them a big time program that is a must to schedule.

2) BYU is sticking it in the eye of Utah by playing only Utah State and building up their program in the process.

I think it's more that Utah doesn't see a need to play BYU anymore.

Quote:3) No CUSA/SBC games on the schedule. Going with a couple of top MAC schools instead because of the TV game potential.
Whoever BYU plays is going to be on ESPN/2/U, or on FS1.

BYU has an agreement with Fox?

Don't you think a school like BYU consults the networks before scheduling?

No, but if BYU played a game @ Rice or Middle Tennessee etc etc, that would be one of the games that FS1 picked up from CUSA that year.

I don't think they need to. The difference between the TV value of a Toledo game vs a Troy game, 4-6 years out, is negligible.

Now, the number of Mormons in Ohio vs Alabama might be something they'd consider in looking at Troy vs Toledo.

They signed to in 2010 but then they formed the scheduling agreement with the ACC (5 games/season) and so may now end up buying out the games since they don't fit anymore.

Old WAC mate Arizona won't do a straight H&H
In 2013 they signed a H/H/N deal with the neutral game at Univ of Phoenix stadium so technically you are right but its not a 2:1 like you imply. Last year the @ Provo game was moved from 2020 to 2021 to allow BYU to take a Michigan State series. The location was changed to Las Vegas in exchange for messing up Arizona's schedule. They did add a 2026-27 H/H when this change happened.

...old MWC mate TCU wouldn't either.
This game was a neutral site game at Cowboy's Stadium.

Nebraska won't return the game
BYU filled a 1:done opening with hopes of building a relationship since they had never played Nebraska before.

BYU has a lot of 2 for 1's with P5's and some "neutral site" games with P5's, in their respective backyards.
The only true 2 for 1 (not a 1:done then a later scheduled a H/H or neutral site games) I can think of is USC and Stanford to get in opposite Notre Dame who alternates opponents on the road thanksgiving weekend to balance PAC12 scheduling in November. Does that make "lots" when you are scheduling 12 games/season since you have no conference games?

I think Wisconsin is a 3 for 1. (anyone?)
No. Similar to the Nebraska game, BYU filled a 1:done hole in Wisconsin's 2013 schedule. Then in Sep 2013 they announced a H/H series for 2017-18. Later the @ Provo game for 2017 was moved to 2019 but is still @ Provo. http://www.fbschedules.com/2013/09/byu-w...019-provo/

Everyone will spin things to their POV but still...

You are wrong about that. The MAC's TV arrangements with ESPN/CBS are a big factor and so is Toledo's consistent performance.

The games are only 2-4 years out BTW.

The roadie at Toledo could be picked up by CBS Sports, If ESPN doesn't have a slot in the schedule for it.

Sure.

UMass is a MAC football school.

"The Cougars and Minutemen will play each year from 2016 through 2019. The first two games — on Oct. 8, 2016, and Nov. 18, 2017 — will take place at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Well it's KittonHead, so for now we're a MAC school when it helps his point and not a MAC school when it doesn't.

my point of view is pretty unbiased...if that's even possible for anyone to say admittedly. I don't even want them in the AAC (ECU already can get an H&H with them) and ECU wouldn't be in the same division if BYU was in the same conference...so there's that...just an outsider's looking in opinion on an opinion board. What's your POV? Cheers!

Be irrelevant. How does Mendenhall answer your question after he says "we need to be in a P5 conference in 3 years"? I guess your coach says it and its no problem. Why you getting bent out of shape about a random post by a guy with no dog in the hunt?

I totally disagree.

UMass got the 4 game series with BYU on its own merits regardless of conference decision.

Had UMass stayed in the MAC they would probably have gotten a 1 for 1 with BYU as one of the more valuable MAC properties along with Toledo and NIU. Valuable meaning from a market/brand standpoint. Going independent opened the door for more games that is all.

Ah...thanks for the clarification.

On the P5 in 3 years comment, Mendenhall clarified what he meant by that at this year's Media Day. He said that is the timeframe where he anticipated another shift in realignment. It has also been said that scheduling is getting better (with lots of work) and the reason they have to get a P5 invitation is that an independent BYU can't compete with P5 conference share of money.

Gotta love those independent schedules that Notre Dame and BYU play/ a nice throwback before mega conferences became the rule of the day.

How so?

BYU knew they would have to play some G5 competition so why not play Toledo and NIU when it will be selected for ESPN2 or at a minimum CBS Sports.

I mean that BYU expected to be playing the Toledos and NIUs etc 2 for 1 or 1-for-neutral (SMU @ BYU, SMU vs BYU @ Jerryworld) most of the time

Then again, we didn't expect Mizzou to play 1-for-1 at Akron either, so what do we know.

They did?

RE: Toledo signs 1 for 1 with BYU, NIU signs 1 for 1 with BYU
I think one of the reasons BYU is doing 1 for 1's is that it gives them a chance to reach out rich alumni living near urban centers. With the MWC schedule we would be limited to schmoozing local alumni in the Mountain West region that knew BYU was coming every year. With the current schedule they get to reach out to alumni nationwide in a more personal way.

When BYU played at Virginia a couple of years ago there were multiple fan events, and a festival type of atmosphere. Since they don't come out here very often, most Cougar fans from the DC area made the drive. I am positive there were more alumni willing to donate at that game than our typical road games vs. Wyoming or New Mexico.

I am guessing the game against NIU will bring out the rich Chicago alums in ways that games played at Ft. Collins will not. Probably the reason it is against NIU instead of Georgia St. has been hinted at by the MAC fans - ESPN.
