Get in the ocean and look out for sharks, baracuda, and jellyfish.
Id add sting rays to that list. I have a triangular scar on my ankle from one I caught at Topsail Island. I fought it for about 30 mins surf fishing and was dumb enough to get close to it when I landed it. It was about 30lbs. The SOB put a barb into my ankle...through rubber hip boots and caused me to have to be transported by ambulance to the hospital. It was the most severe pain I have ever experienced. I walked on crutches for 2 months and lost all my toenails. I had pitted edema and my foot turned 3 different colors. I will NEVER bother one again.
Yowsa, sounds painful.
I'd remove wolves from the list though. You'd have much more danger from a mountain lion.

Idiots in Raleigh decided to raise and release red wolves in north eastern nc a few years back. Now small livestock and domesticated animals go missing. Walking around in some places at night is definitely a risk to your well being.

The largest one I heard of was 8'. They take an arm or a leg, then they discover you're not what they want and they go away. They're after seals, turtles, whatever.

There was also a deck collapse in North Carolina tonight where a lot of people got hurt (no deaths yet thank goodness). I wonder if there were some land sharks that were gnawing at the deck (only making a joke because I'm hoping no serious injuries resulted).
It hasn't been a good month for the North Carolina beach communities.

Cool diagram I saw on Facebook earlier today
I know it doesn't explain all of the attacks, but it shows why some of them may be happening.

There are very few if any documented cases of wolves attacking people in this country.

There are relatively few documented shark attacks too, but that doesn't mean that there isn't a risk.
Wild hogs are definitely a greater risk than wolves in NC, but people tend to fear wolves more.
I'm further south so hogs, bears, and wolves aren't a large risk. It's more coyotes, snakes, and the occasional bobcat.

It's just that you'd be hard put to find a single documented wolf attack on humans over decades, whereas there are a few shark attacks (at least) every year.
I'd be much more worried about some crazy human being out there in the dark. Or snakes.

I deal with them on a nightly basis shrimping. Usually they're under 20 pounds but i have had several upwards of 50 pounds. I've never stuck myself, but had several rake across my hand or arm. Its rather painful and the swelling is intense and it always leaves a scar.
I was using sand fleas as bait. I had already caught a nice puppy Drum and thought I had hung a big Red. I walked down the beach with this thing several hundred yards until I realized what it was. I should have just cut the line. The SOB clearly won the battle.

They always win the battle. If they don't physically hurt you, they're just aggravating as hell to try to get off the bottom.

That sucks. I was down at Topsail this past weekend. Lots of people on the beach, but no many in waist deep or deeper water. Luckily, there was a tidepool along the beachfront that allowed for children to play. I can't go to the beach without getting in the water so I went out as usual, but just for a little while.
