A teenage girl lost part of her arm and may lose her leg. Another teen was attacked a few hours later and another was attacked just south of Oak Island on Ocean Isle Beach on Thursday. This one hits close to home. My daughter was on Oak Island last weekend, I have family living at Ocean Isle and we have a trailer at the beach between these two.

They still don't know if the girl will lose her leg. The boy lost his arm. The OIB girl had minor cuts. She got off the boogie board when he first hit it. The shark took several bites out of the board.
They said the scene looked like something you'd see in "Jaws". My family was on Cape Cod when they were filming Jaws a few miles away on Martha's Vineyard. My neighbor was an extra in the movie.

My sister still won't go in the ocean 40 years later. With the increase in shark sightings, I may not go in either. The time & place to avoid: early morning or dusk, in waist-deep water.
Ita just down the coast from me and frankly im not surprised. Sharks are always a littlw more aggressive this time of year when the water can be a little murky after storms and it gets hot. I feel for both teens and their families, but it's not as big of a deal as it is starting to be made into.
I've swam in the ocean and surfed piers since i was young, even caught a shark fishing from the beach, it's juat part of being in their territory and looking like food under the right circumstances.
I'm headed to Bald Head Island with the family & friends for a few weeks here in a week. Just adjacent to Oak Island. Can't wait!

Used to date a life guard who worked there (they had a home in Caswell Beach). Met Bill Cowher there. No idea if he still has a home there.
The 12 year old girl was lucky. There was a EMT nurse, her brother a fireman, and her other brother a police officer there. When she got to shore they went to work and most likely are the only reason she is still alive. She lost her arm but the parents released a statement saying that her leg should be saved. The shark hit her thigh but must not have gotten the bone. God is good.

I believe he still does. Along with Howie Long, former Sec of Education, Dr. Bill Bennett.
tough kid with a great attitude

didn't the Feds ban commercial fishing of sharks?
An eight year old boy was attacked at Surf City NC earlier this week. He had minor injuries.

A 50 year old was attacked today at Avon NC. Injuries aren't known yet.

Quote: A man was bitten by a shark while swimming in the surf off Hunting Island about 11 a.m. Friday, according to the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District.

The man noticed a 4-foot-long shark swimming around him and yelled, 'Shark!" only to be bitten by a second one he had not seen, district spokesman Scott Harris said.

When first responders arrived, the man was on the beach with serious bleeding. He was quickly treated and transported by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The man was vacationing in the area from Pennsylvania.
When will tourists realize that it's a BAD idea to swim near piers???

They're like the velociraptors from Jurrasic Park!

I wonder if the state will ban shark fishing from piers in NC? I think it's banned in VA. Now I know why.
I can confirm what was reported in the Wilmington Star this morning about the increased number of sea turtles drawing the sharks in so close. Yesterday off the Brunswick coast we spotted at least 10 sea turtles making the journey to and from the beaches less than 1000 yards out. Other fisherman are reporting the same thing. The turtle rescue projects are making a big impact on the increased numbers.
