**** up #1 = Choosing private, liberal arts school
**** up #2 = Taking out a loan with a less than reputable bank (since they're now defunct). Not many respectable banks just shut down.
**** up #3 = Mother co-signing
**** up #4 = choosing "writer" as a major. SMH at these idiots.
**** up #5 = Thinking she's useful to society with this mindset.

#4 If you are going to be a writer he chose a good place actually.

Sorry. Being a writer is a joke of a career for MOST people.
Maybe so, but this one is in the NYT.
OK, So what are you trying to say here? He happened to get a good gig. That makes him even more of a scumbag IMO.
I said that from the start, what a scumbag he is. The point is your numbered list isn't exactly fair or accurate.

Me thinks the public education our tax money funds should prepare them to find ways to pay for college if they choose to go that route.
The plan to repay is hinged upon getting a good paying job out of college, the fact is the cost of college is out of control.....my kids will each have about 40,000 in student loans when the graduate..and that is only 1/3 of the total cost. My ex and I are responsible for the other 2/3. Both kids work full time during the summer and part time during the school year and earn barely enough to cover their personal expenses.
Luckily we are in a financial position to pay our share, many parents are not able to help much and the student is on the hook for all of it, thats close to 120,000.
Dumb choices... dumb choices. Yes the costs in genearl our out of control. By the same token, nobody held a gun to any of your heads and made them go to private or out of state school.
The go to out of state public universities that are actually cheaper than instate public universities(Illinois public university costs are crazy high, and Illinois has one of the lower percentages of kids staying instate for college as a result).
Good Lord, that's ******* ridiculous. Why is it so high there? In NC the tuition costs are ~$6K to 8K per year for a 4 year degree. http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreview...ina&state=
I'm sorry for that post because I've never heard of such outrageous cost for in-state tuition.
No need to apologize...I am also including room and board and fees in the costs...in any event all in NIU is about 28k per year, 14k of which is tuition. UIC is a bit cheaper but not by much. My daughter is at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee which is 19K all in and my son is at Iowa State which is 31K all in.
