Bernie Sanders
I figured Cankles gets enough coverage here. Frankly, this guy scares the hell out of me.

http://blogs.reuters.com/great-debate/20...tial-race/

Quote:He wants to: provide debt-free college for all who seek it; guarantee workers a living wage and such basic rights as paid-sick days and equal pay; expand Social Security benefits, and move to Medicare for all.

Sanders has argued this case for some time. But this could be his moment. Sixty percent of Americans agree with him that the “economic system unfairly favors the rich,” which may be one reason politicians in both parties are uncomfortably trying to fit into populist garb. Two-thirds of the American public think the rich pay too little in taxes. Two-thirds think CEO pay is too high. Three of four think climate change is a serious or very serious matter. In the 24 hours after he declared, he raised $1.5 million. Roughly 35,000 donors gave, on average, less than $50. A larger group of 145,000 signed up online to volunteer.

http://www.stltoday.com/news/opinion/col...0e8ed.html

Quote:Understanding why Bernie Sanders’ presidential candidacy is important requires revisiting the politics of St. Nick. The senator from Vermont has little chance of defeating Hillary Clinton for the Democratic presidential nomination. But he is reminding his party of something it often forgets: Government was once popular because it provided tangible benefits to large numbers of Americans.

At a time of rising inequality and short-circuited social mobility, Sanders is unapologetic about taking some wealth and income away from those who have a lot of both to ease the path upward for those who don’t. He has proudly called himself a democratic socialist, but he doesn’t spin abstract Marxist theories. He wants government to do stuff, and the sort of stuff he has in mind is potentially quite popular.

Political commentators routinely complain about politicians who are not specific enough. Sanders has more specifics than Ben and Jerry’s has ice cream flavors. He has called for $1 trillion in infrastructure investment. He wants the federal government to mandate a minimum wage of at least $15 an hour and restrict the ability of employers to declare normal employees as “managers” and thus rob them of overtime pay.

He would replace our current health care hodgepodge with a Medicare-for-all single payer system. He thinks the government should provide free college education for all comers, arguing that the Scandinavian nations and Germany are “smart enough to understand that the future of their countries depends on the education their young people get.

The "living wage" argument... for those in which it resonates, would you exempt teenagers or require businesses hire them for the summer at a rate equivalent to $40k per year? I have axed this countless times on here and haven't gotten an answer.

If minimum wage were increased considerably, I'd like to see them add a tiered system like other countries have. Other countries have a wage structure where those under 18 and in some cases 21 have a lower minimum wage than those over those age limits.

If you give someone $40,000 a year in guaranteed income everything goes up in price commensurate and $40,000 becomes the new $0 income.

And we're back at square one.

Yeah, something needs to be done to make sure teens are working. One of the many unindended consequence of high minimum wages is that it reinforces nepotism. In many, if not most localities a 16 year old with no work experience almost has to know someone to get that first job. Sure, without a job they can still earn money under the table by cutting neighbors' grass or babysitting neighbors' kids, but they have to know someone to start building a resume. Then even if they go to college and get a worthwhile degree, they come out with little or no work experience or professional references. On top of that, the last thing we need is to add to the number of teenagers either doing nothing or making money on the black market. I rarely ever see any teens working anymore. The hot spots when I was growing up were Dairy Queen, Busch Gardens, and busing tables at restaurants. These jobs are now filled by adults, and in Busch Gardens case, foreigners. Even the pool lifeguards, which used to be 100% high school kids, is now about 50/50. What is going on?

This is true, but I am just trying to look at a different angle. I do think those that work should make as much as those that don't work. I am not sure that is true right now. If I don't work and learn to game the system, I get $X in welfare, food stamps, section 8 vouchers, etc. If I work minimum wage at McDonald's, I suspect I get my earned income plus the welfare, food stamps, and section 8 vouchers needed to get to the same $X. That isn't right either. Used to be that teens would work the minimum wage at McDonalds and, as dependents, there was no welfare, food stamps, or section 8 vouchers subsidizing their living. Again, what happened? Do teens not want to work and their parents don't make them or is there some incentive to the McDonald's of the world to hire grown men and women to do teenage jobs?

I think you have a shifting economy, where low-end service industry has replaced the industrial industry as the prime landing spot for low skill adult workers.

Coupled with this, the day to day life of the average teen is more structured and focused on (pushed by parents) doing things that make them attractive to college admission boards, which is something working at Busch or DQ doesn't accomplish.

So colleges don't value a kid that had to work in high school now? Plenty of us didn't have the choice. I'm not sure what it's like in your neck of the woods but I see teens working fast food (esp chick fil) and retail all the time.

As a Democrat, I would be opposed to non-citizen voting and I support Bernie.

RE: Bernie Sanders
Most of this thread is nipping around the ankles.

If we indeed want an educated workforce, responsible "kids" (up to age 26, now apparently) that will show up, work hard, take out the trash, wipe up snot or puke, do the one or two little things that get them noticed LOOOOONG before they simply show up with some degree in Political Science and demand the Exec's chair, then we have got to get them working in the first effing place.

That starts at 15-16! Not middle age. Not when with 3 kids and no experience. It starts as the pimple-faced teen who isn't an entitled trust fund snot, one who can actually appreciate that someone gave them a freaking job in the first place.

That's how you build a workforce, and a generation of people that will work, create, manufacture, do whatever to takes to make it in this Country.
Adversity is a good thing. Overcoming it is even better. Too many now have never done either. They're simply entitled to it.

RE: Bernie Sanders
Wisconsin Democratic Party Convention Straw Poll Shocker: Bernie Sanders Surges To 41%, Narrowly Losing To Hillary Clinton…

America’s got a fee-vah, and the only prescription is more Bernie Sanders.

Quote:Bernie Sanders scored 41 percent in a straw poll vote at the Wisconsin Democratic Party convention this weekend — finishing a close second to Hillary Clinton, who won 49 percent.

The Vermont senator received 208 of 511 delegate votes at the state convention in Milwaukee on Saturday, while Clinton won votes from 252 of the delegates, leaving her just short of a majority. Both Vice President Joe Biden and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, who announced his candidacy late last month, received 3 percent of the vote. Former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb, who is considering a bid, won 2 percent of the vote, while former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee, who announced his long-shot candidacy last week, received 1 percent.

The result is another encouraging sign for Sanders, who is drawing large crowds in early nominating states such as Iowa and New Hampshire. In the two weeks since he announced his candidacy, the Vermont senator has seen an uptick in the polls against Clinton — who remains the heavy favorite — and Sanders is showing signs he could pick up some supporters of Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the progressive icon who has said repeatedly that she will not run for president in 2016.

This is simply moronic. Not saying you're a moron, mind you, that would be name calling, but just that what you puked from your mothers keyboard, in your dad's basement is moronic.

Pay Mcd's and walmart's pimply faced, 16 yo's whatever you like, I guess, it's (generally) a free Country.

So then what does the shop down the road do?

You know, you leftist, the small coffee shop that always had the best pancakes, hot coffee and a pleasant smile to greet you. Do they now pay 15 an hour, too? Or just close up shop?

Why? Because the big-ass, know it all, master of all slaves federal leviathan has dictated from on high how much someone in Dubuque should make, based on the supposed needs of someone in New York City.

The sooner you idjits get out of our way, the sooner this schitshow can turn around. Please. Just go!

Quote:By all means, open your checkbook and start writing. Send in extra on your federal return.

No thanks, I'd rather tax the rich.

What I preach is taxing the rich. I'm not rich but if I were I'd happily pay a lot more in taxes.

What Republicans preach is cutting taxes for the Rockefellers and Paris Hilton, while cutting benefits for the needy. They're shills for the rich and corporations. In the last year they cut billions from student aid and in food stamps, but fight for billions in tax cuts for the estate tax (Rockefellers and Hiltons) and shielded billionaires from tax increases. It's a slap in the face to any reasonable person paying attention.

Quote:Where does all this money come from? Do you think we're outsourcing to many jobs now? Just wait until $15 min hits.

Sanders has proposed a Wall Street financial transactions tax like we have for sales taxes on other goods, that would tax stock trades at a rate of 0.1 percent and trades of most derivative instruments at the rate of 0.01 percent, and would raise $130 billion/year, to pay for the free college.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dean-baker...38808.html

But let me guess: that's SCARY too!

Nothing has outsourced more jobs than the free trade deals pushed in the last 20 years by Republicans and corporatist Democrats. As soon as NAFTA passed the Maytag plant here in central IL began shutting down and moving to Mexico. Most of the jobs which would be impacted by raising the minimum wage would be non-outsourceable, non-manufacturing jobs anyway, like fast food or retail. You can't have a dude in Mumbai grilling your hamburgers. You need to get the clue.

You can make exceptions in the law for small businesses or certain types of employees, like most states do for waitresses.

Small government conservatives should support this idea because the current system allows Wal Mart to pay their employees $8/hour, which is so low it qualifies them for food stamps and other entitlements, and so your taxes end up paying the rest of their salary and subsidizing a large corporation raking in tens of billions. That's corporate welfare.

Quote:I imagine your IQ rivals that of Forrest Gump.

I qualify for Mensa. I imagine you don't.

Bernie Sanders won't win but he's pushing policies that would tangibly help most Americans and really only scare the rich and corporations in America who control our political system, which is why he won't get the money needed to compete. The matchup is going to be Hillary vs whatever empty vessel pushing Wall Street-written corporate policies the Republicans come up with, who's chosen on the basis of the size of his American flag lapel pin or twang in his voice or whatever the stupid reason is. It doesn't matter.

So the Wall Street bankers you like sucking off really don't have anything to fear from Sanders. They'll be okay with Hillary or Bush. Congrats.
