Unlike our neighbors to the rural southwest, If UAH decided to field a team, I wouldn't try my damnedest to stop them.

It might kill Alabama A&M out right. These southern states have been thinking on merging all these HBCUs into other schools. Could Alabama A&M be merged with UAH and change the name from UAH to Huntsville A&M? UAH would inherit Alabama A&M's sports including football. Could they be made D1 when merged? Or do they have to reclassified again to be D1?

Mississippi lawmakers are thinking of merging Alcorn State and Mississippi Valley State into Jackson State. And then the Louisiana lawmakers want to merge all the FCS schools into the bigger schools. Only McNeese State could survive.

Not sure how UAH adding football would effect A&M in the least bit, especially from a fan interest standpoint.

Both schools are located in the same town. Could Huntsville afford 2 D1 football schools?

A merged school can keep Division I athletics. UT Pan American becomes UT Rio Grande Valley this summer after the merger between UT Brownsville and UT Pan American. UTRGV will inherit UTPA's membership in the WAC, but the athletic teams will have a new nickname.

Augusta State went through this a year ago and is now known as Georgia Regents. Their athletic teams remained in the Peach Belt (Division I independent for golf) and kept ASU's Jaguars nickname.

If UAH and AAMU merge, it would be a political feat of epic proportions. I would put more chances in Alabama State becoming part of the Auburn system since AUM is not as research intensive as UAH; Auburn could even officially become Alabama State University at Auburn without changing its athletic branding. Auburn was legally known as Alabama Polytechnic Institute for most of the 20th Century.

The real challenge of merging UAH and AAMU would be finding a way to unite two very different academic missions and levels of brand equity. Huntsville may be the largest city in Alabama five years from now, so it may not be that critical to merge the two schools. Athletically, you would probably also want to keep UAH's hockey team even if the school were to inherit AAMU's SWAC membership (although the school would probably immediately apply to the OVC or Atlantic Sun/Big South).

Not a chance in hell of either one of them happening.

They are doing it in Georgia and Texas. It can happen in more states.

Not gonna happen. Thinking about it and doing are two different matters. There is too much historical relevance for HBCUs to ever merge with a non-HBCU or HBCU period.

http://wreg.com/2015/04/10/fbi-ranks-mem...rous-city/

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A new report from the FBI, claimed Memphis is the third most dangerous city in the nation. The study compared crime rates of cities with populations over 200,000.

Memphis was only just ranked below Detroit and Oakland, California.................

That is comedy gold, right there. Birmingham has carried this cesspool on its back for a hundred years. I'd rather you just said thank you.

150,000 people have fled bham in the last 50 years. Largest municipal bankruptcy in US history until Detroit recently stole the crown. 5 billion dollars in debt. Bham can't carry itself much less help alabama. Bham is a cesspool

Birmingham has not declared bankruptcy. That would be Jefferson County.

Troll.

Haha. Bham is the largest city in jeffco and the cause of the bankruptcy.

If I'm just trolling, name one good thing about bham. Not that will happen. you can't include bham southern either, they built a wall to keep bham out.

Bham is the Detroit of the south....without the automotive industry

One positive for Birmingham is it isn't perennially on the Forbes Most Miserable Cities list

http://www.forbes.com/pictures/mli45hdlg...phis-tenn/

Memphis was #1 in 2010, #2 in 2011, and #16 in 2015

Memphis was #1 in 2010, #2 in 2011, and #16 in 2015

That's progress, I guess.

Unless other cities got worse and Memphis stayed the same.

I have been to the suburbs of Memphis, Birmingham and Detroit. My thoughts are those are some of the best places in the country to live.

Unlike our neighbors to the rural southwest, If UAH decided to field a team, I wouldn't try my damnedest to stop them.

Why would UAH need a team? And where the heck would we put the stadium? The open space left on the campus needs to be saved for future school growth not a stadium that would be empty every Saturday. I would rather see us build a real fraternity row, more dorms, and two more academic facilities in the space towards the back of the campus.

Even if we wanted to go with an off campus stadium there is just no viable option aside from trying to work out a deal with Alabama A&M.

Or Milton Frank Stadium down South parkway.

It's not a matter of can we afford it, it's a matter of does the city actually demand it. And the answer is no.

You have to take into account the foreign & non Alabama natives in Huntsville that are just here because of the abundance of technology jobs. They along with hardcore Alabama fans would have zero interest in UAH football. Then you also have to consider the demographics of the school.

Then you have to take into consideration that as much as we want to call ourselves "Huntsville's University" many of the natives do not see us that way.

This is very true. A great deal of AAMUs attendance for home games travel up 65 on Saturday's from Birmingham. They have very little support in the Huntsville area.
