This is the first time the Trustees have been denied their way since Gen. James Wilson's Union cavalry burned the UAT campus in 1865. Bryant Junior probably thinks this is worse.

Aside from the issue of FCS vs FBS for 2016, how will UAB fare with a schedule? I have seen no indication Kentucky has replaced its 2016 game with UAB, and 8 C*USA games would give UAB 9 games. UAB would still need a fifth home game to meet FBS scheduling requirements. UMass needs home games for 2016, so that could give UAB a sixth road game and give UAB a non-FCS home opponent for 2017; UMass already has five home games for 2017.

Exactly. Listen to what Watts said at the presser. He left a lot of "outs" in the deal. If the pledged funds ($17M to cover deficits and $13M for new practice facility) aren't met, the program won't get any extra funding from the school. If costs go up, donors have to cover them. They sound committed for now, but they have a whole year (or more) to reneg on the deal. I'm not suggesting they will, but I have to think that this whole thing today was a ruse. Watts even suggested that the new report by CSS came to the same conclusions the previous report by Carr did regarding financial viability, and that the reason for reviving the program was the pledged donations (and the threat of being expelled from CUSA). I hope that these fears are unfounded, but I've seen enough politically motivated deals to think this one isn't as genuine as many would like.

I have no problem with schools dropping sports that don't come close to covering their own expenses. I remember FCS Hofstra dropped football out of the blue due to lack of support and interest. Let's see how long UAB's interest lasts this time.

I don't think it will be a huge problem...they can also play a shortened schedule...say 9 to 10 games.

Great news for UAB. Hope this upwelling of support and charged fan support gets you back on your feet quickly. I think the new culture and national attention will get you stronger recruits in the long run.

On a separate note, I heard our president and AD were advising Watts on disbanding football. I'd consider it a favor if you included them in your call for removing administrators who mislead their fanbase and hamstring athletic programs. 03-shhhh

Had not heard that. Watts' first target was the "pack of elitists" in the Honors College - a truly innovative program - and the guy who built it took a pay cut to go to JMU and build yours. You're about to see great things happen in the valley.

They will probably be handled as a two-year FCS transitional program beginning in 2016 and fully back to FBS in 2018.

They essentially gave themselves the death penalty. Even with the fan base rallied and the city of Birmingham behind them 100%, it could take a very long time to recover.

Probably good news for the Sun Belt as well. CUSA would have likely backfilled from the Sun Belt. Probably ULL, Texas St. or Arkansas St.

will be tough to rebuild.

Lol not rubbing salt in the wound but it's not like UAB football had a high standard to meet....I think winning more games than they lose has been the goal every season. And that has not happened very often.

Am I wrong on that?

Here is the thing, the internet has changed many things about society. Posting a video of you spanking your children for cursing at you could cause millions of people to jump in arms at you.

The BOT took a risk and did something that many people have been thinking to themselves for a long time. Then the internet community went into panic mode and got everyone in arms.

What I'm curious to see is how many of these people who were up in arms actually stick around to support the program. I have a feeling that not even 70% of them will.

Alabama, football center of the universe.

Only birmingham could eff up football in alabama. It's like the university of Alaska being unable to make ice
