No changes to the coaches but we did add some experience (3 UAB players..2 starters) in players. Western was so young last year and actually would play decent defense for 2 plays then give up a big gainer on 3rd down. Or plat decent for 3 downs and give up the first on 4th. With young players all it takes is a mistake to open the door for a long play.

I think we are at the very least 15% better on defense this year in getting off the field on 3rd or 4th down. Last year that would have been good enough 3 more wins. Probably 4. Western lead by double digits in every game but Tech mid way through the 3rd qt. Playing fast hurts more later in the game when you are young on defense and the 2nd are even younger.

Western is sitting where Marshall was at this time last year...all the hype going into the season. Marshall delivered and with Western having a SEC and Big10 team on the schedule early we could get ranked a lot earlier than Marshall....especially with LSU as game 8 and making it respectable or pulling off the upset of the season.

if we deliver on the preseason hype.

LOL...

You care to explain what is so funny to you?

Western doesn't have a team full of superheros like Marshall on defense but then again when you have a offense that can score you don't have to have superheros. I think that showed last year and a small improvement in getting off the field helps a lot.
Every time you post its funny. I don't think anyone takes you serious anymore.

And you think anyone values your opinion?

I for one think this Conference is wide open and 5 teams can win it all. We will see a tie breaker decide a lot of things.

Yeah....if you think THIS is confidence, you ain't see nothing yet. 03-lmfao

I just got off the phone with some of our leadership in the athletic department in Ruston, and they think this year's LA Tech team is going to be very hard to beat. I am being told that LA Tech is bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than we've possibly ever been. Furthermore, this will be Skip Holtz's 3rd year of running the football program, and EVERYBODY is bought in now.

And don't forget this guy, who has ALREADY scored 61 TD's in his LA Tech career:

But especially football, where last years game was so lopsided, most Tech fans were tailgating in the parking lot mid way thru the 3rd qtr.

Shoot my mouth off? No I believe it was the Tech fans doing that. I was asked a question and answered it. In that I gave Marshall the respect of living up to the hype they received preseason last year. With the hope Western can do the same as we are getting the "hype"

If thinking your defense can get off the field 15% more on 3rd or 4th down with another years worth experience and the addition of 2 UAB starters is... shooting off your mouth

Then I'm guilty. Hey at least I'm not saying what a great offense my team is going to be ...with a SEC reject that couldn't get it done on one of it not the worse offenses in the P5. No that belongs to some Tech fans. At least my running off of the mouth is REASONABLE expectations.

Tech fans love to live in the past...one game is just that. It has zero to do with this seaon

....You don't worry about Jeff Driskel. LA Tech DONKEY STOMPED WKU 59-10 (and it wasn't THAT close) last year, and it was a result of good offense AND good defense. Besides, LA Tech is known for having some of the best, wide open offenses in the country over the years (e.g., 2011, 2012 & 2014, to name the recent ones). That's why Driskel --and Cody Sokol last year-- showed up on our doorstep, and not yours. 04-cheers

Well lets see Western was 3 yards or plays away from 11 wins last season and just about the whole team is back and the addition of 2 UAB starters (DE and LB) on defense along with another years of growth from the returning players. So Western has basically the same offense and we won our last 5 including a road top 25 win. So why shouldn't Western be picked to win the east?

He just asked a question. In what areas will WKU be improved next season?

Well I believe I gave him a answer but just in case I wasn't clear enough...

almost the whole team back on offense and defense

year older

new additions in 2 UAB starters and jucos will make the defense stronger and deeper which hurt us last year

coach in his 2nd year...will probably not make the same mistakes on dialing back the offense at the start of the 3rd qt

Having the entire roster back. Worked well for UTSA last year. 03-banghead

I think most of us were hoping to win 6 games going into last season. Going into this season we're returning most of our offense that scored 59 on WKU, 55 on UTEP, and 76 on Rice. Anything can happen but I think we have reason to feel pretty good this year.

I think we all (tech fans and myself) will agree your defense drove the offense last year. It was that defense that got Tech to a higher level than they though...preseason?

OK looking back there's a reason Tech was so good on defense ....you had 10 returning starters coming back. This year...5

That's going by Phil Steele

While I don't expect to see Western's defense anywhere close to why Tech did last year...I do think it's very reasonable to get a 15% improvement on 3rd and 4th down and on long plays. Western is returning 8 on defense and with the addition of 2 UAB starters that would be 10. Along with another years experience for our 2nd team which was younger than our starters last year. That should add some depth to the defense...

I'm not looking for a turn around on dee like Tech had last year....15% should be enough to win the conference (east) as long as the offense preforms. It would have been last year

Well three of those five defensive starters I expect to be future NFL draft picks so there's some quality there. I think that five starter number is a little misleading as well. He's leaving out a DB and a couple DL that have pretty much been starters. We lost our MLB but the MLB who started the conference championship and bowl game will be our starter this year. Really we'll have at least 1 new DL, 2 LBs and then our 3rd and 4th CBs will be young guys. I'd say those 3rd and 4th CBs are the spots I'm most concerned about because we're counting on young guys with pretty much no experience to step up there. That and the kicking game are my only concerns.

You earn it on the field. Losing a QB screwed our whole season last year. That should tell you the fine line we walked between success and failure, so losing 40+ seniors the year after a season like last year would be grounds for anyone to be picked last or next to last in their conference, unless they recruited a bonafide gold mine of talent. If we had been picked anywhere but last or next to last, I'd have been surprised. We'll just have to see what our boys can do. Until then, I'll be frank in asking, why even give a **** where others think we'll be? lol

I get this feeling we will surprise and be better than advertised. Not world beaters obviously but maybe challenge for a bowl.

Not setting expectations overly high, but MT will field our physically largest O & D lines ever. We're solid in the backfield and with incremental improvement at QB, MT will be competitive. Barber is back at LB along with several nasty hitters who fly to the ball.

Don't be surprised if MT royally messes up a couple of good team's seasons; we will play in a very foul mood this fall. I'm expecting 7 or 8 wins....possibly enough for second in the East.

(Plus, MT is smart enough to never overlook FIU or FAU given our history. We'll prepare for a punch-you-in-the-face bar fight with our Florida friends. I'm not sure some in this league have that attitude as yet which may lead to some interesting upsets.)
