Texas comes out looking pretty good.

I agree but, the South did dedicate a couple hundred years to being viewed this way. Those generations bequeathed this to those living now.

It's time to move on, but sentiments usually last way past their expiration date.

Also it wasn't that long ago. You've probably broken bread with those who've contributed or at least gladly dealt with it.

The South gets a bad rap but there are a ton of Sundown towns in places you wouldn't expect, especially near Chicago.

The south is well represented. We know that NJ and Philly is racist

I guess that's an interesting graph. I'd be curious to see similar ones for other hot topics of American culture, like perhaps gay marriage or pro-choice and pro-life. I suspect some areas are green just because they're so small in terms of population that I doubt many people in those areas are bothering to post fiery comments online.

Sort of surprised at the Wilmington/Myrtle Beach area at the NC/SC border.

True, but I think there are a lot of historical assumptions that are simply being carried forward.

It's funny because I lived in Philadelphia for 4 years and can confirm the whites there are generally the most racist people I have ever met. The blacks, on the other hand, were friendly and willing and looking to engage. In SE Virginia, where I grew up and currently live, the opposite is true. The whites are friendly and try to engage, but the blacks generally want no part of mixing it up. I just wish everyone could get beyond the racial schit on both sides.

Boston is even worse, but Brooklyn takes the cake. Really anywhere that is loaded with strong and proud Irish from my experience. They have no problem dropping the N bomb left and right in casual conversation in mixed company.

I've lived in both the north and the south for extended periods.

The main difference is that the north is very segregated. There are homogenously-white towns all over the place, and usually occupying these towns are white folks who believe all Southerners to be racists even though they themselves almost NEVER see anyone of color in their daily lives. It's like this: "Southerners are so racist....while I ride the bus to my 99% white public school." They rip on the South for having a history of segregation (enforced by government), when in their own back yard they've done nothing but segregate themselves VOLUNTARILY.

In the South, such homogenous towns really don't exist. Co-existing is a part of life. We are all mixed here, all over the place.

I was at a basketball camp and one of the coaches(from northern Wisconsin) said that he had never seen a black person in real life until one checked him at his first practice in college. Nice guy though.

I met more racist people in NY than I ever did growing up in MS..

It's wrong on Missouri.. These boys are pretty brash up here.

We cannot expect for institutional racism to exist for 250 years and then suddenly expect it to go away by simply saying it's time to move on.

This country will experience the effects of racism for many generations and IMHO a period of reverse racism before we can even start to heal.
