It doesn't.
But it cuts down on the number of wins needed to finally get above .500.

Sure, but what a way to accomplish it. We normally have an exhibition game and then another one against a non-Division I opponent. That should be it, or maybe one more. I hope the scheduling of good opponents will get a little easier if we maintain a decent record, I can see where opponents don't want to schedule a team that's likely to get 5 wins the entire year. I'm not saying we should schedule tough, we aren't ready for that, but we should have few non-Division I opponents.

RE: NIU Bball Banquet
When you have 300 Division 1 teams how can you not schedule 5 of them?

What are you talking about? Ohio State Missouri UIC Bradley The three Division I team in the NIU tournament make seven D1"s and there will probably be two or three more Not to mention 11 more Mac d1 schools. I am sure they will play 25+ Division I games.

Ew
This is what I was talking about.
2-4 is too many.

For a team that hasn't been above .500 in the past 9 seasons?

RE: NIU Bball Banquet
2–4 is hardly too many when you must play "pay" games at the Ohio State University and Mizzu. It would take extraordinary efforts to win either of those games which is why those opponents pay $90,000 to play NIU at their places.

Also, by having their own tournament, The Huskies get two extra games as in such a nonexempt tournament all three games count as just one.

To be able to start the conference season at 9–3 instead of 7–5 or 6–6 Might get students and others excited and significantly improve the attendance as well as instill confidence in the players – especially young ones –and a build a winning attitude

Not one person on here said anything about CMU's schedule this year. They jelled as a team got confidence from winning and increased their attendance. Also, NIU has only 25 games scheduled so who knows who the other 4-5 games will be against.

RE: NIU Bball Banquet
if it were my way - i would only play D-1 teams, maybe NAIA or DII for an ex. i agree that a few Ws at the beginning of the season can give confidence to the kids - but this is also something that can be coached and should be within each player to have the confidence to play their role 110%. why do you want to give someone an easy way out? if i were coach i would want to challenge my team as much as possible before the most important part of the season - conference play - which is what will determine/shape who makes the NCAA from your conference.

from outside the team perspective i saw someone post that i like - having a better record earlier in season can get more fans interested and seats filled - as opposed to losing interest the first couple weeks.

we are on the right path and have so much momentum for the future, not sure why we would want to schedule so many "cupcakes." wont help our ooc sked - only can hurt it. rather play little known D1 than play nobody (a team that is not in D1 and has is not involved in the level we compete at)

Can someone explain to me how in the heck Monty was able to put together a class this good. It really is baffling to me what he has been able to do this year.

How much was this Banquet? Where was it? Who was actually invited? (curious because of the comment that they wish more people would show up and I know I was not invited)

RE: NIU Bball Banquet
Eastern Michigan use to play a cupcake schedule early on and go 10-0 but fans saw through that.
What is the point beating Aurora college by 50. What did we learn from that this year?
To me a soft schedule is only a way to finish above .500 for the year.
I don't expect to take on titans for 12 games but I would prefer a IPFW, IUPUI, Wisc GB, Winthrop, Youngstown State

Average Joe sees those names and had no clue who they are over any lower division local teams. I want to see a basketball team that is winning. I don't care if they are losing to a team that made some noise for itself in the tournament for a year a few years back.

Get above .500 then start to improve the quality of the opponent but not too much because it really doesn't matter for an at large bid in the MAC.

The two Wisconsin kids helped sell NIU. Marshawn Wilson played with them. Porter, from Rockford is a no brainier. They got a little lucky with Zelis. Zelis was going to visit Arizona St just a couple weeks ago. ASU fired their coach, so there was no visit. Next thing you know, you got a pretty good recruiting class.

You guys may think NIU bball sucks but Zelis doesn't and that's what matters.

Thanks, Ill keep an eye out for it next year so I can post the info.

I don't remember seeing an e-mail but I would also not be surprised if I did receive one and just miss it.

Hopefully this class will help us turn the corner. Certainly the best incoming class in years.

I didn't get an e-mail invite and I've been a season ticket holder for years.
