Well, now that it's been revived, can anybody tell me when high schools started playing football on Friday nights? I had never heard of it until moving to North Carolina.

As far as I can tell South Carolina has always played on Friday, except in situations where schools shared stadiums then they would alternate Thursday and Friday night games. My Grandfather played football in the 1930s and they played on Friday back then.

It's been Friday's in MN for at least 30 years. Figured that was the norm around the nation.

I went to High School in South Florida and North Carolina, and at both schools varsity football games were Friday nights. I assume they are on Friday in Texas too because of the TV show.

They are but Thursday night games are common too.

Yep, always been Fridays.
Back when I played (06-08) I think I only ever played two non-Friday games. One was on a Thursday due to schools sharing a stadium and another was on a Saturday due to a hurricane

It doesn't matter how many fans a HS has in the stands. A major college playing on Friday is going to cut into that revenue. Schools with smaller attendance would be likely be harder hit. And it is not just schools near the college. If Alabama were to play on a Friday night, it would affect high schools across the state and probably several neighboring states.

Did high school stadiums have lights that far back? Major league baseball didn't play its first night game until 1935. When I was in high school the public high schools in the area all played on Saturday afternoon, and the Catholic schools played on Sunday afternoon. Often the Catholic schools were playing on fields belonging to a nearby public school.
But I can't recall any of them having lights.

As far as I know, it's always been Friday here in West Virginia. At least to the best of my knowledge...I'm sure someone can go back far enough and see it was different, but for my lifetime (born 1976) it's always been played on Friday with a few exceptions here and there (weather conflicts, occasional local/regional rescheduling to not compete with Marshall/WVU Friday night game, etc). Here Saturday mornings are for peewee/little league type football, Saturday afternoons/evenings are college, JV is Thursday and Friday night is high school varsity.

Same here in the state of Alabama and it has been that way for awhile. HS football is huge down here and the coaches are quite revered down here as well unless your team stinks and has stunk for awhile. Then you are looking for another job.

Glad to see NCSU hold their ground. The new ACC TV Contract forces them to play a game on Friday is bad enough. Thank God we can refuse to host.

A part of the ACC’s 15-year, $3.6 billion contract with ESPN is that every team will play at least one Friday night (but they don’t have to host a Friday night game; most still will be at Boston College or Syracuse).
N.C. State assistant athletics director Fred Demarest said the school has told the ACC it will not host a Friday night game.
“We respect high school football in this state and we value our relationship with the coaches,” Demarest said.

With ODU not at ODU. if game were at ODU they would be fine with a Friday game. ACC deal only applys to ACC games not CUSA games, I think NC state is breaking contract. The TV deal for ACC does not cover away games. If I were ESPN I would sue them like yesterday.
As been mentioned this was three years ago but the game was at ODU. CBS Sports wanted to put the game on Fri night but NC State was only there to recruit the Tidewater area so they said no. I think it ended up being broadcast on ASN or something.

I grew up in Pennsylvania and have spent the last 35 years in Louisiana.
High school football is played on Friday nights in both states.
Hell, I thought that was a universal thing, high school football on Friday, college on Saturday and the pros on Sunday.

Same in Oklahoma.
My understanding was before lights, games were played in late afternoon on Friday. This is why JV is played on Thursday. Saturday were for college, pro on Sundays.

I know that at least some of the stadiums had lights because of old photos my Grandfather had were of night games.

No, not just about recruiting. ODU is in the Tidewater's DMA. That DMA broadcasts in 7 North Carolina Counties. That would be like Clemson playing a game in Charlotte or Asheville on a Friday night and thinking it will not affect the folks in SC.
You will not see NC State play on Friday night during baring litigation or big fine from the ACC office. Steve Logan and ECU were crucified for playing on Friday night. It ain't happenin'.

Well the only reason you agreed to a H&H was to boost exposure and recruiting in the Tidewater region so playing on Friday and not being able to invite your recruits would negate the whole point of playing the away game. There might be other reasons for being against it. But you didn't really need other reasons.
