RE: Hypothetical Question – Next Year …

Let’s say Josh lands an impact grad-transfer guard for next year (or Kedren becomes the Kedren of old). The Lawsons come in and have a solid freshmen season. Everybody else progresses to some degree – Austin take “the next step”.
Let’s say we finish behind SMU, UConn, and Cincinnati in the AAC (23 total wins or so), win 1 or 2 AAC tourney games and are considered a “bubble team” come March. RPI somewhere in the 60s...a few surprise wins, a couple questionable losses.
We make the First Four and win our play-in game as a 10 or 11 seed. THEN we upset the 6 or 7 seed in the Round of 64. In the Round of 32 we are competitive, but fall short to a proven coach (Izzo, Bennett, Pitino, etc.) – we don’t get blown out. Single-digit loss, comes down to the wire a la Arizona in 2010.
Also, let's say Josh has the #25 class coming in for 2016 (for the purposes of this post)
Does Josh get another year? Is that considered a “successful” year?
Discuss…
If your initial scenarios play out...Memphis will not be a bubble team, but will be top twenty, a tourney lock, and in good shape to win and advance.
If that very likely scenario happens, Pastner will certainly not be in any job trouble, but very well could leave, as six years worth of basically steady progress, stemmed by one down season, got him over the top mocking and disparagement.
The manner in which the AAC folded this year in the tourney doesn't bode well for a 6 or better seed without a phenomenal regular season & conference tourney championship for our Tigers. Without a 6 or better seed, the road to the sweet sixteen can be very difficult.

whomever has the reigns will have a heck of a rebuilding year ahead of him. and that coach will have to be an exceptional recruiter and talent developer phenom. that will be our only saving grace.
prayer will not hurt
From a basketball only perspective, making the move this year would have given the new coach a change to recruit and not have such a bare cupboard.
As it is, one more year of Paz, mass exodus of players, the new coach will be taking over at ground zero particularly if even 1 of th4e Lawsons hits the bricks.... Much worse than when Paz stepped in. He had X trained, seasoned seniors Kemp and Mack, plus Niles to build around and then Elliot Williams fell in his lap.
Hopefully there are big(12)ger things shaking that precluded dumping Pastner right now..... one can only hope.
Spot on, we will now need a homerun hire this time next year.. Calipari will have left Josh in a much better situation than Josh leaves the next guy.. Of course, I guess that's the difference between getting a better job and getting term'd.
Are you serious? Wasn't aware of any games being vacated under JP or any probation about to be handed down, not to mention the expectations that Cal tried to reset before he left.
True, but from a roster standpoint, Josh took over more from Cal than the "next guy" would take over from Josh. And that's saying a lot.
You sure about that?
Addressing that point only...not the sure to develop pissing contest about other issues...Pastner was not left Evans, nor Wall, nor Cousins, nor Henry, not Taggart, not Anderson, nor Dozier.
He had Kemp, Mack, Sallie, Spoon and Coleman. Williams came over from Duke.

Pastner was left Taggart - they shared a hug at his introductory presser.
New Tigers Basketball Coach Josh Pastner gets a congratulatory hug from Tiger's forward Shawn Taggart after a press conference at the University of Memphis.

RE: Hypothetical Question – Next Year …
In response to the original post, regardless of how Pastner performs next season (unless we go to a Final Four and Pastner garners national respect), he should go BECAUSE he will likely never get a top 25 class again. Pastner lovers on here don't see it, but he is a national laughing stock well known for his bad record against good teams, high player turnover, and terrible in game coaching. No one outside of Memphis fans cares about his 70% win percentage, because no one outside of Memphis watched the majority of those games. They don't care about games against ECU, Tulane and Austin Peay
