The problem is that Florida has a huge population from out of state that bring team loyalties with them, and many natives prefer to cheer for the their local spring training team over the two Florida franchises. Florida loves baseball, it is just that many of us love other teams.

- FIU is the largest school in Florida and is located in the largest metro in Florida. During the past five years, the football team is 3-2 against their rival FAU, they've played in two bowl games, they moved to Conference USA, and they've had some great games against better competition (including wins against UCF and Louisville). Even with all of those positives, they are by far the least popular team in Florida. A lot of CUSA (and some AAC) fans have suggested that FIU is a soon-to-be juggernaut that can capture the Miami market and equal or surpass USF and UCF. This poll confirms what many USF and UCF have said in reply: Almost no one in Miami cares about FIU, and if you are looking for the next USF or UCF, you have better odds going with FAU or a school that doesn't have FBS football. I'm not sure why FIU is so unpopular with so much in their favor, but that's how it is.

Agree with everything you said, and Imma let you finish, but UCF is the largest school in Florida.

FIU has grown a lot but the problem is that they are sharing the area with many pro teams as well as Miami. No way that FIU in the SunBelt or CUSA will ever surpass Miami.

Which is why i've never been a fan of Georgia State, no matter where they are.

Competing with Georgia, the Falcons, Georgia Tech, and all the other professional sports is a no win scenario. Georgia Southern, maybe, but I hope we're never faced with that problem.

The real truth behind the numbers is that the very large majority of those polled were asked via landline calls. So, think about it. Who do you know that still uses a landline phone and what's the average age of those respondents. It's no surprise that the numbers are the way they are.

Now poll Florida residents through Twitter or other forms of social media and UCF will most likely lead the way.

I would never say never. Miami's best days seem to be behind it and FIU has state funding and its own stadium, something Miami may never have because of how expensive land is in Coral Gables. not that it matters given that UM is a tiny school with most of its diehards living in other states.

PPP knows more about getting accurate polling results than you do, I can promise you that. I'd have to look at the data-set to see the number of respondents that responded to the college football question, but if it's high enough to prove statistical significance, then it's safe to assume it's accurate within the margin of error.

Won't happen in our lifetime. I grew up in miami and live in area. Trust me FIU does not get enough from the state nor its in a conference to ever challenge UM in this area. Now if FIU joins the SEC then I could say you might be right. Right now even the FIU students are mostly UM fans.
It's worse than saying North Texas would surpass TCU

This. Per wikipedia-

FIU: 50,394
UCF: 60,810

Not only that, the south florida market just doesn't care about either F?U team. They've got Miami as their collegiate team, the Dolphins as their pro team, the Heat as their BBall team. And to make matters worse, there are two new teams trying to break out in the same market. Short of a hall of fame coach going to one of those teams and staying put, I don't see either one making any real headway.

Amazed we are that high as bad we have been in the major sports for the past few years.
And I'm amazed that UCF has passed USF by in popularity when USF had an eight year advantage while a member of a BCS conference.

Why should you be? The facts are that UCF in football has had more success recently and that's the sport that gets the attention in our state, that plus more students plus our collapse in the major sports I'm surprised we are that close to UCF or UM. If we win we would be at least same as those two.

I'm stunned that USF is at 8%. Until recently I d never met someone from Florida who wasn't a Gator fan. Again, someone FROM Florida. I've met a bunch of FSU and hurricane t-shirt fans who aren't from Florida. Met many NFL fans in Miami, Tampa and Orlando....my experience only, but the big city folk in the "non-southerner" tourist cities of Florida don't seem to know college football at all or their Gator fans by default. Again, my observations about folks from the Sunshine state.

Gators definitely have a decent presence in Orlando, but UCF is got way more pull. If you spend time outside of Disney, way more cars have ucf logos vs any other college. Gators being down is even losing t shirt fans around here.

The plural of anecdote is not data, so let's look at the data. A similar study (PDF Here) by PPP for the state of North Carolina put ECU at 13% fan support, which puts you tied for 3rd with NCState, trailing Duke at 16% and UNC at 23%. So, by percentage of the population, ECU controls a larger percentage of NC fans than UCF does Florida fans. But, and this is where it starts looking bad, compare the state populations to those percentages, and you'd see UCF has 2.7 million fans compared to 1.3 million ECU fans.

Maybe it's true that you've never met a Floridian who roots for any team besides UF, but according to the data, Floridians rooting for UCF outnumber North Carolinians rooting for ECU by 2 to 1.
